LAKEVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT REQUEST TO CLOSE CITY STREETS FOR
THE IRONMAN EVENT
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to allow a temporary closure
of City streets for the Ironman Bike Event.
Passage of this motion will result in the Lakeville Police Department being able to
minimize cyclist/motor vehicle interaction /conflict during the "Gran Fondo" portion of the
Ironman Bike Event.
Overview
A "Gran Fondo" event is taking place near the beginning of the Ironman this year. A
"Gran Fondo" is a mass start ride with each rider being issued a timing chip. There will
be a 7:00 AM start time for the 100 mile route (up to 500 participants) and a 7:30 start
time for the 50 mile route (up to 1,000 participants). For each start, there will be a
rolling closure of the intersections they travel through with each intersection being
closed only as long as it takes the riding pack to pass through.
Primary Issues to Consider
Prevent cyclists from having to stop at control points.
Prevent cyclist/motor vehicle interaction /conflict.
Minimize inconvenience to motoring public.
