PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING APRIL 28, 2012
AS ARBOR DAY IN LAKEVILLE
Overview
As part of the criteria to qualify as a "Tree City USA" community, the Mayor and City
Council must officially proclaim a specific day as Arbor Day in the City of Lakeville. This
year's Arbor Day Observance and Tree & Shrub Sale will be conducted at the Central
Maintenance Facility, 7570 179 St. W., on Saturday, April 28, 2012. The event will be
from 8 -10:30 a.m. and encompass the following activities:
♦ Distribution of pre- ordered trees and shrubs
♦ Seedling giveaways for each participant
♦ An opportunity to ask tree - related questions of City staff
In addition, a tree donated by Dakota Electric Association will be planted at a Lakeville
park the week of April 30, 2012.
Staff cordially invites the Mayor and City Council members to take part by volunteering
to help distribute trees and shrubs to Lakeville residents at the Central Maintenance
Facility on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 8 -10:30 a.m.
Proclamation
WHEREAS,
Lakeville residents have expressed strong support for
preserving and protecting the natural environment, including
lakes, ponds, wetlands, trees and other natural amenities; and
WHEREAS,
trees are a valuable resource to our community in purifying our
air and water, helping conserve our soil and energy, serving as
recreational settings, providing habitat for wildlife of all kinds,
and making our community more attractive; and
WHEREAS,
Lakeville has a long history of planting trees and assisting
residents in managing our urban forests; and
WHEREAS,
Lakeville annually plants several hundred trees with the help of
civic organizations and volunteer groups such as Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, 4 -H groups and others; and
WHEREAS,
Lakeville has maintained the status of a Tree City USA by the
National Arbor Day Foundation; and
WHEREAS,
Lakeville will continue to plant trees and support the protection
of our existing urban forest through policies established in the
Tree Preservation Ordinance.
WHEREAS, Lakeville will hold a community tree sale as part of the annual
Arbor Day celebration.
THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Lakeville, in its firm support of
beautifying the community, proclaims
April 28, 2012 as
Arbor Day in the City of Lakeville
