Awareness of the LAHS also grew, due in part to the organization's involvement in several projects and programs. Heritage Center Following several months of discussions the Lakeville City Council approved a proposal to renovate the former police station building across the street from City Hall into a new home to serve senior citizens, the Yellow Ribbon organization and the Lakeville Area Historical Society. The Heritage Center will provide additional space for LAHS displays and handicapped accessibility for programs. The new site is expected to open in fail of 2012. Generous contributions from the community and donations to a city- sponsored online auction assisted with funding the project. The Lakeville Area Historical Society published its 15`" annual historical calendar in 2011 with twelve unique photos of Lakeville's past. The very popular calendars are purchased at local retailers by individuals who wish to add to their collections and by corporate members as promotional items for their businesses. Commemorative calendar sets, which include all of the previously published calendars, are also available. Annual calendar sales are the Lakeville Area Historical Society's largest fundraising effort. Website An experienced website designer volunteered their time and talent to begin building a site for the LAHS. Photos and information are being compiled and the website will continue to be developed as time and resources allow. This will make historical records which have been collected more easily accessible to the public. The Story of Music , Stories from Home - April 18 , 2011 This program of music and spoken word featured Lauren Pelon and Gary Holthaus and was offered at the Lakeville Area Arts Center. The presentation incorporated stories, music, and musical instruments from cultural traditions of our region, ranging from Native Americans to Scandinavian, German, and more recent settlers from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The performance was funded in part by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund through an allocation made possible by the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment. s World War // Weekend — May 21 & 22, 2011 The LAHS participated in the WWII Weekend, Armed Forces Day, at the Dakota City Heritage Village at the county fairgrounds. The weekend consisted of living history, soldier camps; weapons demonstrations; military displays including vehicles; National Guard rock climbing wall; authors; and veterans. The LAHS provided _a display of military uniforms. Movie Night " — October 17, 2011 Several fascinating videos have been produced over the years which depict the history of Lakeville. The short videos consist of informal discussions with Lakeville business owners and pioneers. Participants enjoyed popcorn and lemonade as they watched several of the videos. The mission of the Lakeville Area Historical Society is to document, collect, preserve, and teach the history of the Lakeville area. The LAHS continues to solicit old newspaper clippings, photos, and artifacts, and also collects obituary notices. As time goes on, these items will become more valuable to people who are researching their family histories. We are very appreciative of the continued donations that help fulfill the organization's mission. Members of the Historical Society are also grateful to the City of Lakeville for providing use of the building and its maintenance. 8795-210"' Street W., Lakeville, MN 55044 Phone: 952 - 469 -0373 www.mnlahs.org " "Shining a Light on our Past"
