City of Lakeville's
Watershed Cleanup Day
April 21, 2012
Over 1,300 volunteers helped to remove trash throughout Lakeville's parks, roadsides, wetlands,
and trails. This is a yearly event to celebrate Earth Day and clean up our watersheds of all the
debris that collects throughout the year.
We had several organizations participate: Girl Scouts, Boy /Cub Scouts, 4H, church groups,
school groups, environmental groups and businesses as well as several families and individuals
who take pride in the City and contributed to keeping it look its best.
This year we had just over 700 volunteers attend the thank -you lunch and education event.
Volunteers received a lunch consisting of pizza, chips, cookies, and a beverage. They were also
able to receive promotional items (reusable insulated bags, reusable canvas bag, doggie bag
dispensers, stickers, recycled crayons, and a dispenser for reusing plastic bags). Once someone
participated in an education activity, or were able to answer an environmentally related question,
they could choose a promotional item. The main topics involved recycling; reducing waste,
water quality, exotic species, water conservation and things you can do to help the earth. All of
this, as well as the t- shirts, were funded through the Dakota County Large Community Funding
Grant.
New in 2012 was a an information booth about Garlic mustard and Buckthorn (Cheryl Culbreth
of Landscape Restoration, Inc.), Dicks /LSI (David Domack) attended the event to educate about
what can now be recycled. Several Blue Thumb introduction classes (Curt Coudron of
DCSWCD and Jen Morrow, Blue Thumb Partner) ran concurrently with the event and attendees
were able to enter in a drawing for a rain barrel. Other things going on during the
lunch/education event were the coloring table with recycled crayons, a water jeopardy game
(Kathy Carlson, Vermillion River JPO), and Mike Tredan (The Recycle Zone) ran the recycle
wheel and handed out a take home recycled crayon.
This was the third year of the food drive and we collected $26.55
in cash donation and 205 lbs of food for local area food shelves.
We received donations from Little Caesars Pizza; truck, staff, and
disposal from Dick's Sanitation, GarbageMan, Troje's Trash
Service, and Waste Management. Estimated trash removed was
around 6 to 6.5 tons of garbage from Lakeville's watersheds.
Thank you to all!
