CONSIDER LIQUOR LICENSE AMENDMENT FOR BABE'S SPORTSBAR AND
GRILL TO INCLUDE AN OUTDOOR PATIO
May 21, 2012 City Council Meeting
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to amend the current Liquor License
for Babe's Sportsbar and Grill to allow and outdoor patio.
Passage of this motion will result in the owners of Babe's to construct a patio on the east side
of their building located at 20685 Holyoke Avenue.
Overview
Tom Tomaro and Mike Tupa, owners of Babe's are requesting approval to construct a 27 foot
by 57 foot (1,539 square foot) patio to be located on the east side of their building facing
Holyoke Avenue. The patio would be located just north of the east entrance to the building
and would eliminate seven existing parking stalls. Babe's currently has 103 on -site parking
stalls and would have 96 after the patio is constructed. The total number of stalls required for
this building in the C -CBD Zoning District is 52. The patio size that was originally proposed has
been reduced to allow sufficient drive aisle width and parking stall depth between the patio and
Holyoke Avenue. The patio will be poured concrete and enclosed with a 42 inch high wood and
metal cable railing. A SAC Unit determination was made by Metropolitan Council Environmental
Services and it was determined that no additional SAC units need to be collected.
Babe's is located within 150 feet of a residential zoning district and thus the patio will have to
be closed at 10:00 p.m. Liquor, food, or music shall not be served, dispensed, possessed,
displayed, or furnished on the patio after 10:00 p.m.
Primary Issues to Consider
• Does the application submitted by Babe's Sportsbar and Grill meet the requirement
of the City's ordinance for outdoor patios? Staff has determined that it does.
Supporting Information
• Completed Patio Application and site plan showing the location of the proposed
patio.
