Community Involvement: Training and Outreach
Dr. Paul Saterlee at training for Apple Valley Fire
Department for first responders.
Ongoing Training
• Trained nine City of Farmington employees in
performing Heartsaver CPR and using an automated
external defibrillator (AED). They are now certified for
two years through the American Heart Association.
• Participated in the City of Apple Valley Life Fair. At
our informational table, we provided blood pressure
checks for employees.
• Attended the Apple Valley Police Advanced Citizens
Academy. Allina Health Emergency Medical Services
provided information on the ambulance service, as
well as demonstrations of specific equipment.
• Participated in Fire Department Open Houses in
Apple Valley, Lakeville and Farmington. Paramedics
brought ambulances and equipment to display and
also provided tours.
• Provided a 40 -hour First Responder class for new
Apple Valley Firefighters.
• Provided first aid and ambulance orientation for
Farmington High School students.
• Dr. Paul Satterlee attended a First Responder session
provided for the Apple Valley Fire Department. He
reviewed procedures for the CAT (combat application
tourniquet) and discussed caring for trauma patients.
He provided a great question and answer session for
the 16 firefighters in attendance. His 20 minute session
ended an hour later!
8
EMT Scenario Day
Allina Health Emergency Medical Services provided an
"EMT Scenario Day" training session for 18 emergency
medical technicians (EMTs) serving the ALF communities.
Continuing education sessions are a requirement to renew
certification.
The EMTs responded to situations, such as a child
experiencing burns from a kitchen fire; an elderly
gentleman complaining of chest pain; a small child
involved in a fall from a second story window; an airway
performance station and working in the back of the
ambulance.
The three departments worked extremely well together!
We are in the process of planning another scenario day.
Many thanks to Farmington Fire for hosting the event.

Community Involvement: Training and Outreach
AED Presentation to LSA Laser
Ben Pecholt, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in
February 2012, attended the 2012 Allina Health Heartsafe
Communities Survivor's Dinner and won an AED!
Ben donated his AED to his workplace, LSA Laser in
Plymouth. Heart Safe Communities presented the AED
to Ben and LSA Laser's HR and Safety Coordinator. LSA
Laser will also benefit from "compressions only" CPR and
AED training conducted by Plymouth Rotary Club.
ELF Ambulance
In July, a citizen emailed Dennis Feller, Finance Director
for the City of Lakeville, mentioning an idea to replace the
"A "of ALF with an "E" and have it say ELF Ambulance in
celebration of the holiday season.
So, in the holiday spirit, we dressed up the ambulance
like Rudolph and had two paramedics dress up like elves
for our attendance of "Holiday on Main" in Lakeville.
They showed the ambulance off and took pictures with
Santa Claus.
All and all, they had a great time. The goal for next year
is to do something similar for all three cities during the
holiday season.
