Olson, Community and Economic Development Director Copy: Steven Mielke, City Administrator Adam Kienberger, Economic Development Specialist Date: May 24, 2013 Subject: May Director's Report The following is the Director's Report for May, 2013. The May 28th EDC meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be scheduled for Mid -June. We will send out a notice of the date as soon as it has been confirmed. Building Permit Report The City has issued building permits with a total valuation of $43,247,900 through April. This compares to a total valuation of $28,919,608 through April of 2012. The City issued commercial and industrial permits with a total valuation of $5,343,750 through April compared to a total valuation of $2,137,500 during the same period in 2012. The City has also issued permits for 104 single family homes through April with a total valuation of $31,595,000. This compares to 68 single family home permits through April of 2012 with a total valuation of $20,138,000. Lakeville Job Fair The City, in cooperation with the Minnesota Work Force Center office in Burnsville hosted a free Job Fair at the Heritage Center April 30 Approximately 13 Lakeville industrial park and Fairfield Business Campus businesses participated along with a couple of over Dakota County businesses including Dakota Electric. Over 420 job seekers attended the half day job fair. We heard numerous positive comments from businesses that participated in the job fair who indicated that they were pleased with number and quality of the job seekers that attended the event. We will be discussing with the businesses and the Work Force Center as to whether we should make this an annual event. Marketing Activity Update: Staff attended the 2013 Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) conference on April 30 at the Minneapolis Convention Center and promoted Lakeville to over 700 attendees from innovation and technology companies. This was Lakeville's third year as an exhibitor at this conference. Dave attended the 2013 Mid - America Economic Development Council (MAEDC) conference May 15 -17 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota which caters to economic development professionals and site selectors to share best practices across the upper- Midwest. Staff is currently planning a summer promotion by being a sponsor of the 2013 Minnesota Commercial Association of Real Estate /Realtors (MNCAR) golf tournament on June 25th. Asa key market segment, this event will provide Lakeville exposure to 150 commercial brokers from across the Twin Cities. The Mayor has agreed to provide welcome remarks and a pitch for commercial and industrial development in Lakeville. This is also the reason the June EDC meeting needed to be se- scheduled. Development Update The City Council approved the final plat for Tullamore 3'd Addition at its May 20t meeting. This development includes 27 single family residential lots and is located west of Pilot Knob Road and south of 165 Street. The Council also approved another final plat that evening for Autumn Meadows Second Addition. This is 37 lot single family subdivision located east of Flagstaff Avenue and north of 179th Street. The City Council also awarded a bid for the construction of the round -a -bout at 205th Street and Kenrick Avenue adjacent to the Porterhouse restaurant at this meeting. Foreclosure Update There were ten Sheriff Sales in the month of April in Lakeville and a total of 46 year to date. There were a total of 220 for the year in 2012. The trend appears to be fewer foreclosures both locally and nationally. Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend.
