All phases of the street reconstruction project in Valley Park, Clays Acres, and 204th Street are substantially complete. Final paving in some areas and completion of punch list items will occur next spring. 168t Street Bridge Replacement. The bridge replacement was completed and opened to traffic in early November. LAKEVILLE PUBLIC WORKS Christopher Petree, Director November 2013 1 •'• Sewer Repair Problems with a residential sanitary sewer line prompted Utilities Division staff to evaluate the line and determine the best solution to eliminate the problems. The line was televised and the solution was to replace a section of the pipe that did not allow the proper drainage to the sanitary sewer main. With the help of a contractor, a long trench was dug that stretched from the yard into the street and the affected part of the sewer line was exposed. The portion that did not have the proper slope to the main was cut out and replaced. Importantly, the excavation had to work around a water main and the new pipe had to be laid underneath it and still have the adequate slope for drainage. As the crews worked, they placed bedding material in the trench that would help maintain the pipe's slope and keep it from sagging. The pipe replacement was completed in a few hours. The curb has since been replaced and the street patched. Restoration of the yard will occur in the spring. + Water Main Repair Water main breaks tend to occur without notice. There is no way to predict where or when one might occur. The Utilities Division generally finds out about a break when they get a call about water in the road. On a recent morning in November, the Dakota Communications Center called the Utilities Superintendent about a possible break in the 24 -inch water main on 185th Street at Ixonia Avenue. Immediately, maintenance staff was mobilized and valves were closed to stop the leak while were made to excavate the pipe and make the repair. Affected businesses were notified of the temporary water outage. arrangements residents and 2 Due to the location of the break, a contractor was used to excavate the pipe and make the repair. It was fortunate that the water main along 185th Street runs underneath the shoulder because it allowed for the diversion of traffic around the site, rather than closing the street for the duration of the repair. Work was completed by mid - afternoon and the shoulder was patched the following morning. Around the City Street Sweeping. Streets Division crews finished up their second round of fall street sweeping just before Thanksgiving. The focus of fall sweeping is to get as many of the leaves as possible off the street and out of the gutter line before winter snows begin to accumulate. Letting the leaves accumulate and then sit over the winter would result in clogged catch basins in the spring and would increase the potential for street flooding as the snow thaws. Fleet Maintenance. With the changeover between summer use and winter use equipment complete, the Fleet Technicians are focused on keeping the trucks and equipment in top condition for the winter. Installing new snow tires on a pickup truck will help with the plowing of trails and parking lots. 3 Holiday Wreaths. Tis the holiday season once again with warm thoughts of the holidays making the cold weather a bit more palatable. Streets Division staff were out installing holiday wreaths in the downtown area in preparation for the downtown lighting ceremony just before Thanksgiving. Installing the wreaths has been easier in recent years since the City transitioned to LED lighted wreaths with new mounting systems. 4
