HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 06City of Lakeville Parks & Recreation To: Mayor, City Council & City Administrator From: Brett Altergott, Parks & Recreation Director John Hennen, Park Maintenance & Operations Mgr 1 Date: April 22, 2014 Subject: King Park Lighting Project Background: Currently, the City has 14 baseball fields in the parks system, including the Miracle League Field at King Park. Nine fields are located at King, four at Quigley -Sime and one at Steve Michaud Park. None of the fields were constructed with field lighting as part of the original construction of the complexes. The only fields that are lit within the system are softball Fields #1-4 at Aronson Park. Staff and Lakeville Baseball Association (LBA) have been in discussion over the years regarding the desire and need for field lighting. The installation of lighting allows for further play into the evening hours which ultimately prevents the need to acquire land for the construction of additional fields. Cost estimates for lighting King Park, including the Miracle Field, parking lot and trail lighting along with design and administration of the project, is estimated to cost between $1.7 and $1.9M. LBA is committed to donating funds towards the project with an initial donation of $150,000 and additional donations in the years to follow. Staff and LBA are in the process of reviewing the financing options as it relates to constructing the project in phases or at one time. Staff will be proposing the King Park lighting project as part of the 2015-19 CIP which will be presented to the Mayor and City Council as part of the 2015 budget review process. Recommendation: In order to inform existing and potential developers and home buyers in the adjacent area of King Park of the proposed lighting project, staff is requesting Mayor and City Council direct staff to construct and install signage on site regarding the proposed project.
