Subject: Ipava Avenue Traffic Signals - Project Update
Overview
The City Council approved a proposal from Short Elliot Hendrickson Inc. (SEH) to design
traffic signal systems on Ipava Avenue at both 175th Street and 165th Street at its June 2,
2014 meeting. The traffic signals are designed to improve intersection operations by
efficiently accommodating traffic diverted from the Kenwood Trail/185th Street project
area during the Kenwood Trail/185th Street roundabout construction and road closure
conditions, and future traffic volumes.
A permanent traffic signal system is proposed at 175th Street. ADA compliant
pedestrian curb ramp improvements, including push-button stations, are proposed to
improve pedestrian safety. A temporary wood pole and wire -mounted traffic signal
system is proposed at 165th Street. Each signal system will include left turn "flashing
yellow arrows".
Minor striping and signage changes are proposed at each intersection to better direct
traffic as it approaches the intersection. There are no roadway geometric changes
proposed at either intersection.
County, ISD 194 and City staffs are evaluating a potential collaborative fiber network
project that would connect the traffic signals to the County's traffic control system. A
connection to the County's traffic control system would create a coordinated traffic zone
along Ipava Avenue between 162nd Street and 185th Street and maximize the ability to
efficiently control traffic through this corridor.
Staff will provide a project update outlining the current status and next steps.
