For the amount of water produced
and the amount of chlorine
required, the Utilities Division has
specific handling procedures for
the chemical and the containers in
which it is delivered. One of the
safety measures is a chlorine
scrubber, which, in the event of a
chlorine leak, is automatically
activated to absorb and neutralize
the gas and discharge clean air into
the atmosphere. Recently, the
scrubber developed a crack that
allowed small amounts of the neutralizing chemical to leak out and damage the
area around the scrubber. Utilities Division staff is working with a contractor to
repair the crack and reinforce the scrubber.
Quick Repairs
This season’s low snow accumulations have
not meant that the snowplows do not need
repairs. The wear and tear on individual
components continues whether the plow
pushes 1-inch or 3-inches of snow. Recently,
one of the trucks that was out doing snow
removal over a weekend in January
developed a problem with its axle. The axle,
in turn, damaged bolts that connect the hub
to the truck. That required a replacement of
the hub. While looking over other parts of
the truck, technicians noticed that the bolts
holding the wing plow frame to the chassis
were missing. The bolts were
replaced along with the saddle
that holds the plow to the side of
the truck. These repairs are
representative of the types of
repairs caused by the hard use
that these vehicles receive
throughout the winter. They
manifest themselves randomly
and our technicians are always
ready to make the repairs quickly
and return the vehicle to service
as soon as possible.
