HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-04-15CITY OF LAKEVILLE PARKS, RECREATION & NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES February 4, 2015 Co-Chair Peterson called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. Members Present: Lori Bovitz, Tom Goodwin, Judy Hayes, Scott Kelly (Arrived at 6:03 p.m.), Howard Lovelace, Jeanne Peterson, Bob Swan Members Absent: None Staff Present: Parks & Recreation Director Brett Altergott, Park Maintenance & Operations Manager John Hennen, Recording Secretary Tamara Wallace 2. Approval of January 21 minutes Minutes were approved as presented. 3. Citizen comments There were no citizen comments. 4. Staff report On January 28th, staff attended a seminar regarding communication techniques to engage stakeholders and the community through challenging project s. The seminar was funded by the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) grant received by the Dakota County Health Department. 5. Potential Dog Parks sites Parks & Recreation Director Brett Altergott and Park Maintenance & Operations Manager John Hennen, presented three potential dog park sites: Ritter Farm Park, West Lake Marion Park, and East Community Park. The committee members discussed various pros and cons to each site including material needs, dispensers, equipment, pricing for entry, differentiating Lakeville’s dog park from neighboring dog parks, signage, other potential locations for dog parks, space and size requirements, as well as repurposing a current park. Following this discussion, Motion made by Bob Swan, seconded by Judy Hayes to recommend to City Council putting a dog park on the front end of Ritter Farm Park. Ayes: unanimous The committee also expressed the wish to add designated small dog “areas” within other parks as they are refurbished in the future. 6. Effects of Social Change on Parks & Recreation Facilities and Programs Committee members were given several articles about how social change would affect the Parks & Recreation Facilities and Programs, and the impact parks and Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources Committee Meeting Minutes, February 4, 2015 Page 2 trails can have on the community in ways like health and wellness, childhood obesity, and crime. The articles also initiated discussions on using technology to enhance the trail system, social media outreach, potential adult and children’s leagues, multi-purpose use of parks, promoting current resources like the Environmental Learning Center at Ritter Farm Park, updating the parks section of the City’s website, and the “Did You Know Campaign.” 7. Other Business None. 8. Announcements The 15th Annual Youth Ice Fishing Contest will be held this Saturday, February 7 from noon – 2:00 p.m. at Valley Lake Park. There are two Daddy & Daughter Dance Events held on Friday, February 6 at the Rosemount Community Center, and Sunday, February 8 at the Eagan Community Center. 9.
