REVIEW OF PROPOSED ORDINANCE CHANGING MAYORAL TERM FROM TWO TO
FOUR YEARS
Proposed Action
Staff recommends receiving public comment on the attached ordinance. If council desires, a
motion to adopt the ordinance may be considered.
Overview
During a recent city council work session, staff was directed to place on the June 15th council
agenda a draft ordinance to change the term of Lakeville’s mayor from two to four years. It
was discussed that the public would be offered a chance to speak on this topic and then the
council could decide whether or not to proceed with adoption of the ordinance.

CITY OF LAKEVILLE
DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 1, CHAPTER 8
OF THE LAKEVILLE CITY CODE
CONCERNING MAYOR’S TERM OF OFFICE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEVILLE ORDAINS:
SECTION 1. Section 1-8-2 of the Lakeville City Code is amended to read:
1-8-2: TERMS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS:
A. Transition: The term of the Mayor and Councilmembers whose current terms would end the first
business day of January, 2000 are extended to the first business day of January, 2001 and those
offices will be filled at the 2000 City election. The terms of the Councilmembers whose terms
would end on the first business day of January, 2002 are extended to the first business day of
January, 2003 and those offices will be filled at the 2002 election.
Terms: Councilmembers shall be elected for four (4) year terms. The Mayor shall be elected for a
two (2) year term in the 2014 election and a four (4) year term in the 2016 election and thereafter.
ADOPTED this ______ day of ____________, 2015, by the City Council of the City of Lakeville,
Minnesota.
