This signature playground is our largest playground and is one of the most heavily used structures within the City. In fact it is a popular destination for both residents and visitors. The goal is to replace the LOA, in the fall 2016 or spring 2017, with a modern play structure that stays true to the original in creativity and playability while at the same time meeting today's accessibility and safety standards. In March, staff had Minnesota/Wisconsin Playground put together a concept design that has a similar look to the current LOA, however this design is packed with many new play amenities that kids and families seek out in a destination playground. In addition, the structure is made up of maintenance friendly materials, like steel posts, ramps, and decks, composite lumber, and steel reinforced netting to name just a few. In 2015 dollars, the estimated cost to replace the existing structure and make site improvements (cement curb border and drain tile) is $393,158. To date $135,000 has been dedicated towards the project: $85,000 from the 2014 unencumbered balance and $50,000 from the Lakeville Rotary Club. The remaining $258,158 will come from a variety of sources that include individual giving, major donor groups, special events, grants, corporate giving and general fund tax levy. Upon a consensus of the City Council, a fundraising campaign and special events will be finalized, and letters will be sent to businesses, foundations and individuals seeking contributions. Included in your packet is an breakdown of the estimated revenues and expenditures as of August 19, an aerial view of the current playground, and a rendering of the proposed playground. Harlan Lehman of Minnesota/Wisconsin Playground and staff will be in attendance to answer any questions that the City Council may have regarding the design and cost estimates.
