HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 03.bMemorandum City of Lakeville Parks & Recreation To: Mayor and City Council Justin Miller, City Administrator From: John Hennen, Interim Parks & Recreation Director Copy: Allyn Kuen nen, Assistant City Administrator Date: October 21, 2015 Subject: Land of Amazement Playground Fundraising & Grant Opportunity Fundraising At the August 24 City Council Work Session staff was asked to come back with a fundraising plan for the construction of the Land of Amazement (LOA). Staff is proposing an aggressive fundraising campaign that would commence now and run through March 31, 2016. During that time we would meet with potential corporate donors, apply for grants, appeal to individuals and families and work with other City departments in order to achieve our fundraising goals. Attached for your review is a LOA Donor Recognition Plan which includes sponsorship levels with benefits received at each level. At the meeting, staff will distribute a fundraising brochure which informs donors about the project and staff will also present to you a promotional video that will be a part of the fundraising package. Grant Opportunity Staff recently applied for a grant through GameTime (playground manufacturer) for the LOA. The City was approved a grant that would save $36,531 on the total cost of the project. As per requirements of the grant, the City would have to submit a check in the amount of $220,917.76 no later than November 13 for the purchase of the main playground structure and have it shipped out before December 31, 2015. The free standing play pieces will be purchased separately at another time. There is $135,000 in the LOA construction budget. If the decision is to move forward with the grant, an additional $85,917.76 would be required to take advantage of the grant opportunity. There are funds available in the 2015 Park Dedication Fund to cover this amount as result of the decision not to construct the 185' St. trail from Jaeger to Ipava Ave. If the Mayor and Council choose, these funds could then act as a Bridge Loan until we can raise the additional funds. Attached is the Land of Amazement budget indicating the current budget vs the grant budget. As noted, if the Mayor and City Council agree to move forward on the grant opportunity, the total project costs decrease from $393,158 to $356,627 with a fundraising goal of $221,627. Request At this time, staff is requesting direction on the LOA Fundraising Donor Recognition Plan/brochure and direction on moving forward with the grant opportunity.
