No Strapping. • Wood shall be cedar, redwood, black locust, black walnut, or preservative treated wood.(R317) • Guardrails rn mmum 36" above the finished deck boards for decks more than 30" above grade. Open guardrails and stair railings shall have intermediate rails spaced so that a 4" sphere cannot pass through.(R312) Do not notch 4" x 4" posts. • Floor joist & Stair stringers spaced at 24" o.c. require min. 2" wood decking. Floor joists/stringers spaced at 16" o.c. may use 5/4" wood decking. (5/4" decking may be installed diagonally across 16" o.c. joists) Composite decking shall be installed per manufacturer's specifications. • Beams/girders shall not bear on ledger but on sill or top plate of wall. Other connectors allowed per manufacturer. • Fasteners (screws & nails) must be corrosion resistant. Only joist hanger nails may be used in joist hangers with all holes filled. (Roofing nails are prohibited) • Special design is req'd for decks attached to house cantilever. • Future Porch- posts must be at outer portion of deck rims, beam cantilevers are not permitted and larger footings required. • Lateral loads of decks shall be restrained by attaching bottom of deck joists to top plate of basement wall at 4 locations. • Stair Stringer shall be attached to the deck rim with approved galvanized strapping or hangers. • Landings: min 36" length and width. • Handrail 34"-38" above nosing. 1 '/4" to 2 5/8" cross section & continuous.
