HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 05.a Date: Item No. Spotlight on Business Sonnet Montessori Overview The Spotlight on Business program is designed to recognize new and existing commercial and industrial businesses in the Lakeville community. The program is also designed to emphasize for residents, the important tax and employment benefits that business and industry provide to the community. Sonnet Montessori, owned and operated by Ann Thompson, opened its first school in Prior Lake in 2007 and operated in rented space for its first three years and constructed its existing facility there in 2010. Sonnet’s Prior Lake location currently serves 75-80 families. Sonnet opened a new location in Lakeville at 19955 Idealic Avenue on October 19, 2015. Sonnet decided to open in Lakeville based upon three main factors: 1. No existing Montessori presence 2. A strong school district 3. Amount of residential development Sonnet offers programs for children ranging in age from 16 months to 6 years old and has a capacity of 90-100 students. There will be an infant program starting in the fall as well. The school current has 20 children enrolled and attending, and is growing rapidly. Sonnet teaches the Montessori Method which focuses on individualized learning and independence. There are five main categories in which instruction is given which include; language, mathematics, geography, sensorial and practical life. Sonnet will also be focusing on a S.T.E.M. based curriculum starting in the fall of 2016. Sonnet Montessori has an upcoming open house for perspective parents and students on Saturday, April 9th from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Ann Thompson, owner and director of Sonnet Montessori will be present to share additional information with the City Council.
