The mission of the Lakeville Department is: “The Lakeville Fire Department is dedicated to serving the community
through the protection of lives and property by providing public safety education and professional emergency
response.” Since 1884 the Lakeville Fire Department has been working towards the successful accomplishment of
this mission. The purpose of this grant request is to increase firefighter access to a simple, but important tool. The
purpose of this grant request is to expand firefighter access to flashlights. If approved, this grant would enable each
firefighter to have a flashlight assigned to them.
The cost of the grant is the cost of purchasing 50 flashlights at $47.75 per flashlight.
Flashlights are an essential tool for the work of Lakeville firefighters. Because the work of firefighters is often done
in dark situations, in locations with limited visibility, during poor weather, or under other adverse conditions high
quality reliable light sources are an essential tool for firefighters to safely and effectively accomplish tasks. The
Lakeville Fire Department currently provides access to Streamlight Survivor flashlights by equipping each piece of
fire apparatus with flashlights. The number of flashlights on the apparatus varies from one to six.
Expanding the number of flashlights will provide each firefighter with his/her own flashlight, which will be assigned
to them. Lakeville firefighters will match the flashlight with their gear and wear it on the right side of their bunker
coat, which has an area designed for this style of flashlight. Assigning flashlights to an individual instead of
apparatus will decrease the need to take a light off a truck, eliminate the possibility of not having enough lights or
the possibility of forgetting a light. Funding this grant will mean firefighters have ready, immediate and personal
access to an important tool.
The cost of each flashlight is $47.75 through Jefferson Fire. The 50 new flashlights will complement the existing LED
flashlights that are already in service and will be assigned. As the department transitions from flashlights on
charging bases mounted in apparatus to flashlights assigned to each firefighter the batteries will also have to be
changed. The flashlights on the charging bases used a rechargeable battery, but Streamlight is moving away from
this to using reusable AA batteries. Some of the existing flashlights will require a battery sleeve for AA batteries and
the fire department will cover this cost. The new Streamlight Survivor flashlights come with battery sleeve and no
additional updated will be needed. As new flashlights are needed the fire department will build this cost into the
operating budget.
