HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 09 Date: Item No. ORDINANCE AMENDING MAYORAL TERM FROM TWO TO FOUR YEARS Proposed Action If council wishes to change the length of term for the office of mayor, staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve ordinance amending Title 1, Chapter 8 of the Lakeville City Code Concerning Mayor’s Term of Office Overview At the January 23rd City Council work session, the topic of changing the mayor term from two to four years was discussed. It was the consensus of the city council to put the item on a future agenda for consideration and public input. The change from two to four years would require an ordinance amendment, which is attached. If approved, the change would not impact the current mayor’s term. The next mayoral election would still be held in November 2018, but that election would be for a four year term. Primary Issues to Consider Public input has been received on this topic in the past. Attached to this report is a listing of mayoral terms for the major cities in Dakota County as well as the largest 31 Minnesota cities (in terms of 2000 census data). Section 1-8-2 of the Lakeville City Code is amended to read in its entirety as follows: 1-8-2: TERMS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS: A. Transition: The term of the Mayor and Councilmembers whose current terms would end the first business day of January, 2000 are extended to the first business day of January, 2001 and those offices will be filled at the 2000 City election. The terms of the Councilmembers whose terms would end on the first business day of January, 2002 are extended to the first business day of January, 2003 and those offices will be filled at the 2002 election. Terms: Councilmembers shall be elected for four (4) year terms. The Mayor shall be elected for a two (2) year term in the 2016 election and a four (4) year term in the 2018 election and thereafter. B. Terms: Council members shall be elected for four (4) year terms. The Mayor shall be elected for a two (2) year term.
