From: John Hennen, Parks and Recreation Director
Date: August 28, 2017
Subject: Maynard B. Johnson Nomination for Pioneer Plaza Induction
BACKGROUND
In 2010 a policy to induct long-time Lakeville residents or business owners to be honored at
Pioneer Plaza was established. Nominees for this recognition are considered based on their
commitment and contributions to the Lakeville community. Nominees can be submitted at
any time by any current or former Lakeville resident or by a relative. Staff has recently
received a nomination to induct Maynard B. Johnson to be honored at Pioneer Plaza.
Maynard came to Lakeville over 52 years ago as a representative of Hitchcock Industries, his
vision was to develop an industrial park like no other that provided unique amenities to
commercial developers. Through development of the Airlake Industrial Park, Maynard’s vision
became a successful venture that serves the Lakeville community to this day. Maynard, in
partnership with local landowners and community leaders built an industrial park that houses
approximately 150 businesses that currently provide 3,500 jobs for Lakeville and surrounding
communities.
Maynard’s involvement in the community didn’t stop here, over the years he was
instrumental in starting the Lakeville Chamber of Commerce and making the annual Pan-O-
Prog celebration a success. In 1983, he was even appointed Grand Marshall of Pan-O-Prog. His
dedication to enriching the community of Lakeville makes him a true pioneer.
Since 1966 Maynard B. Johnson has shown a commitment to the Lakeville community
through business leadership and the support of community events. He is a well-qualified and
deserving candidate to be honored at Pioneer Plaza.
Along with this memo, Staff has provided the Pioneer Plaza Induction policy and a
nomination letter from Jack Matasosky of APRO Development, Inc.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff is recommending the induction of Maynard B. Johnson to be honored at Lakeville Pioneer
Plaza. If the Mayor and City Council concur with this recommendation, Staff would propose a
resolution authorizing induction of Maynard B. Johnson as a Lakeville Pioneer to be honored at
Pioneer Plaza which then could be considered for approval at the September 5th City Council
Meeting.
Individuals that are currently honored at Pioneer Plaza include; Jerry Erickson, Robert (Bob)
Jensen, Nicholas (Nich) Mahowald and Flavian (Bud) and Louise White.
