HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 05.b September 18, 2017 Item No. PROCLAMATION DECLARING OCTOBER 1-7, 2017 AS MANUFACTURERS WEEK IN LAKEVILLE Proposed Action Staff recommends approval of the attached proclamation declaring the week of October 1-7, 2017 to be observed as Manufacturers Week in the City of Lakeville. Overview This will be the 24th Annual Manufacturers Week in the City of Lakeville, which is part of a state- wide effort to recognize the contributions manufacturers make to our economy including jobs, tax base, and community involvement. A copy of the proclamation will be provided to all industrial businesses in Lakeville. These businesses have also been invited to the Lakeville Manufacturers Appreciation Reception to be held on Thursday, October 5th at the Lakeville Holiday Inn & Suites. A new component has been added to this year’s event, a Workforce Development Panel Discussion prior to the reception. The panelists will share information about workforce development challenges and solutions, and are representing Wyoming Machine, Inc., Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and the City of Hutchinson. This year’s event is sponsored by Dakota Electric Association, Minnesota Energy Resources, Xcel Energy and the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau. It represents one in nine jobs and has the second highest total payroll of any business sector; and Whereas: Manufacturing provides high skill, high wage jobs which significantly contribute to Minnesota’s high standard of living and economic vitality ; and Whereas: Minnesota has more than 317,900 manufacturing jobs statewide or 12 percent of all private-sector jobs; and Whereas: Manufacturing contributes $48.2 billion to the state economy and represents 16 percent of Minnesota’s gross domestic product; and Whereas: Each manufacturing job supports another 2.21 jobs elsewhere in the economy through supplier purchases and employee spending. In all, manufacturing accounts for nearly 1,020,500 jobs or 36 percent of all jobs in Minnesota; and Whereas: Manufacturing and related businesses are one of the largest employment sectors in Lakeville and account for more than 3,500 jobs in our community, NOW THEREFORE, the Lakeville City Council does hereby proclaim that the week of October 1-7, 2017 shall be observed as: Manufacturers Week in the City of Lakeville Proclaimed this 18th day of September, Two Thousand and Seventeen.
