RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE PURCHASE OF AN INSPECTION VEHICLE AND
AMENDING THE 2017 BUDGET
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve a resolution authorizing the
purchase of an Inspection vehicle and amending the 2017 budget.
Overview
The Inspections Department received authorization to add and hire an additional Building
Inspector in 2017 due to the increase of permit activity over the last few years. That position was
filled in July right at the peak of inspection activity. The new inspector has been utilizing city
vehicle #2005 (2005 Chevy truck) which was scheduled to be disposed in 2017. Public Works staff
recently indicated that unit 2005 needs repairs that no longer warrants the value of the vehicle and
the vehicle is no longer reliable nor safe to drive. A new Inspection vehicle was included in the
2018 proposed budget for this position. Staff recommends purchasing the new vehicle in 2017.
The resolution includes an amendment ($66,000) for both the additional vehicle ($25,000) as well as
the personnel costs for 2017 ($41,000) using the additional permit revenues generated by the high
level of building activity as the funding source.
Primary Issue to Consider
• Can we continue to use the spare vehicle (unit 2005)? Not economical nor safe.
