HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 06.k Date: Item No. DESIGNATION OF 2018 POLLING PLACES Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve a resolution designating polling places for 2018 elections. Overview State law requires municipalities to designate polling places for each election precinct by December 31 of each year. There are 17 voting precincts in Lakeville. A polling place shall be located within the boundaries of the precinct or within one mile of one of those boundaries. There are three schools, two in ISD 194 and one in ISD 196, that will be undergoing major interior renovations next summer. They are Kenwood Trail Middle School (Precinct 5), Cherry View Elementary School (Precinct 12) and Parkview Elementary School (Precinct 15). Because polling places are needed for the August State Primary, it was necessary to seek new locations for these precincts. The law does not allow changes between the Primary and the General unless an emergency occurs. The law further requires that if the location of a polling place has changed, the governing body shall send to every affected household with at least one registered voter in the precinct a non- forwardable mailed notice of the location change. Primary Issues to Consider • What is the cost of sending mailed notices to every affected household? Approximately $300 per precinct.
