HomeMy WebLinkAboutINCLUSION POLICYMemorandum To: john Hennen, Dark and Rerreatinn Ilirnr+nr From: Kacie Robinson, Recreation Program Coordinator Date: December 14, 2017 Subject: Adaptive Programs 10[41 ILI ;4[e17LlA City of Lakeville Parks & Recreation Currently we operate under the guidance of our Inclusion Policy. This policy integrates the participant requesting services into our already existing programs. I have attached this policy for your reference. ADAPTIVE PROGRAMS FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS: My knowledge is limited, but here are some entities I am aware of: River Valley Project Explore offers various programs such as arts & crafts, cooking, bowling dances and trips to adults with disabilities. Lakeville Community Education offers private and semi -private adaptive swim lessons. New in winter 2018, a Holiday Party for youth with special needs and their families was offered. Intermediate District 917 is an organization I have been referred to by the school district in the past. They provide increased opportunities for personal and career skill development. They serve students needing low incidence special education services from Burnsville, Eagan, Savage -Dist. 191, Farmington, Lakeville, Bloomington, Hastings, Inver Grove Heights Community Schools, Randolph, South St. Paul and the West St. Paul -Mendota Heights -Eagan school districts. They are located in Rosemount. I have reached out to them and they only provide educational experiences and don't have adaptive recreational programming. PARK & REC'S ADAPTIVE PROGRAM HISTORY: We were a part of Lakeville CARES (Community Adaptive Recreation & Education) and offered limited adaptive programs however, this groups presence dissolved several years ago. Katey Radant, from Community Ed, said the group dissolved around 2013. She stated that the group was made up of two or three Special Education Teachers, a district Speech Therapist, parents, 360 Communities, Community Ed and Parks and Recreation. She believes that everyone just got busy or retired and the group disseminated. The adaptive classes we offered in conjunction with the group were advertised saying "an experienced special education staff member will be on hand." and "participants are encouraged to bring a PCA." We have offered adaptive classes here and there over the years. Dan Brettschneider had expressed to me that if there is a parent 'champion' behind the classes, driving enrollment they work well. If there isn't a specific person driving the enrolment, then the classes usually get canceled due to lack of participation. I found some info on participation numbers for past adaptive classes, this is. not necessarily an inclusive list of all offerings that Lakeville Parks & Rec offered however it is what I readily found information on. • Adaptive Safety Camp -Instructed by P&R, Volunteer Firefighters and McInnis -ISD 194: 2008 (14), 2007 (10), 2006 (15) • Adaptive Snow Creations -Instructed by McInnis -ISD 194: 2008 (11), 2007 (cxl), 2006 (cxl) • Adaptive Snowshoeing 2015 (cxl), 2010 (cxl) We previously held Adaptive Art classes thru the Arts Center. In 2016 they were canceled due to lack of participation in previous years. This past summer, I was in conversations about an Adaptive Martial Arts class thru Parks and Rec. I ended up referring the instructor to Intermediate Dist. 917 due to schedule requests of the instructor only wishing to work with the youth during weekdays.
