HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 06.i Date: April 16, 2018 Item No. APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF LED LIGHT FIXTURES FROM SERVICE LIGHTING Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve the purchase of LED light fixtures from Service Lighting. Overview The 2018 approved budget contains funding to retrofit the parking lot lights at the Police Department from metal halide to LED fixtures. The purpose of the retrofit is to reduce energy consumption, minimize maintenance and repairs, and improve overall lighting levels on the parking lot surface, as well as around the perimeter of the building. Lighting surveys and photometric studies from a certified lighting efficiency professional guided the selection of fixtures. Selection focused on energy consumption, light output levels, warranty periods, ease of installation, serviceability, and cost. Three vendors submitted quotes for similar fixtures ranging from $24,990.40 to $32,890.00. With Service Lighting providing the most cost-effective pricing. The selected fixtures will lower the wattage required and provide more light output than other comparable LED fixtures Dakota Electric Association has projected that converting the parking lot and exterior lights to LED will reduce the kilowatts per kilowatt hour by over 60 percent and save an estimated $3,156.00 on the buildings energy bill per year. Total project costs, including installation, are $28,053.40. Budgeted amount is $36,000.00. Estimated rebate is $1,950.00. Staff recommends approval of the purchase through Service Lighting. Primary Issues to Consider • Is there a need to retrofit the fixtures? The current metal halide lights are thirteen years old. There have been 10 service calls to replace bulbs and ballasts in the last 4 years and this is expected to increase as the fixtures age. Along with reducing maintenance costs, the intent of this retrofit is to reduce energy costs. Supporting Information • A tabulation of the received light fixture quotes is attached.
