Home My WebLink AboutItem 06.c Date: Item No. RESOLUTION APPOINTING ELECTION JUDGES FOR AUGUST 14, 2018 STATE PRIMARY Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve resolution appointing election judges for the August 14, 2018 State Primary. Overview The Minnesota State Primary is held on the second Tuesday in August. Voting hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Minnesota Statute provides that election judges for precincts in a municipality shall be appointed by the governing body of the municipality. The appointments must be made at least 25 days before the election. The attached resolution includes a list of judges to be appointed for this election. Additional judges may be assigned as needed. Election judges are required by law to attend a two-hour training session every two years. Head judges must receive an additional hour of training. Additional training is being scheduled this year on the use of the new electronic pollbooks. Judges are paid to attend training. Primary Issues to Consider • What is the compensation rate for election judges? Regular judges shall be paid $11 per hour. Head judges, who are responsible for the performance of all required duties within their assigned precinct, shall be paid $13/hour. Supporting Information Financial Impact: $18,059 Budgeted: Y☒ N☐ Source: Related Documents: (CIP, ERP, etc.): Envision Lakeville Community Values: Good Value for Public Services Report Completed by: Tamara Wallace, Deputy City Clerk July 16, 2018 City Clerk/Elections CITY OF LAKEVILLE RESOLUTION NO. 18-__ RESOLUTION APPOINTING ELECTION JUDGES WHEREAS, Minnesota Statute provides that election judges for precincts in a municipality shall be appointed by the governing body of the municipality; and WHEREAS, the appointments shall be made at least 25 days before the election at which the election judges will serve; and WHEREAS, guidelines have been established for the appointment of election judges; judges must be able to: • read, write, and speak English; • carry out instructions given by election administrators and Head Judges; • learn and follow current election laws as provided by Minnesota Statute; • answer questions and provide clear instructions to voters; • work well with other election judges and the general public NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lakeville, Minnesota, that the individuals listed on the attached exhibit are appointed to serve as election judges for the August 14, 2018 State Primary Election at the hourly rate of $11.00 for election judges and $13.00 for head judges. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk and/or the Deputy Clerk shall be authorized to appoint additional judges as needed to conduct this election.
