Please contact Shanen Corlett at info@lpsfmn.org or 612-799-8375 The men and women of the Lakeville Fire and Police Departments are committed to providing our citizens, businesses, and visitors to Lakeville the highest level of public safety services possible. The purpose of this grant request is to provide funding to purchase exercise equipment to expand the current capabilities of our gym located at Fire Station #4. The health and wellbeing of our firefighters and police officers is crucial to providing the highest level of public safety. Unfortunately, police officers are at a significantly higher risk for contacting certain medical and mental conditions. Shift work can be a major stressor which can greatly affect an officer’s health. Research shows that shift work is a contributing factor in an increase in metabolic syndrome which can lead to abnormal obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Additionally, over 40% of firefighter and 10% of police officer deaths are cardiac related. It is the desire of our police and fire departments to increase the focus of our officers and firefighter’s wellness. Overall wellness is divided into mental, emotional, and physical wellness. In this proposal we will focus on the physical wellness which would be improved by the purchase of new workout equipment to encourage use of the fitness area by our members and avoid high price gym memberships. In addition to offering a well-equipped gym the police and fire departments encourage a healthy lifestyle to help prevent and reduce workplace injuries. Although the desired area of focus is physical wellness numerous studies are beginning to show that improving one’s physical wellness has a direct positive affect on both mental and emotional wellness. Numerous peer reviewed studies verified “large clinically meaningful improvements associated with exercise”, as compared to the leading antidepressant medications. By investing in our firefighters and officers today we are ensuring for the highest level of public safety services in the future. This grant would benefit 85 firefighters and 59 police officers. Additionally, spending on employee wellness is also cost effective. Studies show for every $1 spent on employee wellness employers are saving up to $3 of health care related costs. The fire department contracts with a fitness equipment expert to conduct annual inspection of all the equipment. The inspection is performed to ensure the equipment is in good working condition. If repairs are needed they will be completed during the annual inspection. Attached to this grant is a price quote from Omni Fitness. Through extensive research we found that Omni Fitness was able to meet the needs of our departments at a reasonable price. Furthermore, they are donating a piece of the equipment, reduced price on two items, and including free delivery. Along with the Omni Fitness equipment is a rowing machine through another fitness store and rubber floor tiles from Fleet Farm. Finally, to

help minimize the cost associated with building a new gym the fire department has offered to change the current space to expand the fitness area.
