City of Lakeville
Parks & Recreation
Memorandum
To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Committee Members
From: John Hennen, Parks and Recreation Director
Date: January 2, 2019
Subject: Discuss Renaming of Avonlea Community Park
As I mentioned to you in a previous email, Staff is asking for the Parks, Recreation and Natural
Resources Committee’s (PRNRC) assistance in establishing a better name for Avonlea
Community Park considering that name ties to the name of the neighborhood development
and those names are typically used for neighborhood parks not community parks such as;
Casperson, King, Aronson, Quigley-Sime, East, etc.
In the previous email, Staff provided some ideas of possible names for the park that can be
considered/discussed. Since that time, some of the less desirable names have been removed
and additional ones have been added as per committee members input. The following are the
names that can be considered and discussed:
Cedar Hills Park (park is off Cedar Avenue)
Cedar Park
Cedarview Park (park is between Cedar Avenue and Highview Avenue)
Cedar Pond Park
Discovery Park (tagline – Striving to Thrive)
Grandview Park
Greenbelt Park
Highland Meadows Park (we have a Cedar Highlands Park)
Mayflower Park (tagline – Yours to Discover)
Pinnacle Park
Prospect Park
Summit Park (tagline - Pursuit of Performance)
At this time, I would ask committee members to come to the meeting with their top two or
three choices from the list or send me any additional ones you would like to consider. I have
also attached our current (1997) Park Naming Policy.
Thanks everyone and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
