APPROVAL OF A PROPOSAL FROM QC COMPANIES FOR THE REPAIR OF
TRENCH DRAINS AT THE WATER TREATMENT FACILITY
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve a proposal from QC
Companies for the repair of trench drains at the Water Treatment Facility.
Overview
The trench drains in the truck shop at the Water Treatment Facility are beginning to deteriorate.
With the deicing chemicals and water that the vehicles bring into the truck shop, along with
vehicular traffic on the drain grates, the rail holding the grates is rusting, and the concrete edges
are beginning to crumble.
Two options are to replace the trench drains or to refurbish them. Replacing concrete trench
drains has proven to be a more expensive option that also impacts the use of the facility during the
removal and replacement. Refurbishing replaces the damaged area with an epoxy mortar and
plastic angle stock. This system takes less time to install and has proven, at the Central
Maintenance Facility, to be resistant to damage from deicing chemicals and water.
QC Companies completed two similar projects for the City at the Central Maintenance Facility in
2015 and 2016 and has the necessary experience in use of the epoxy mortar. While the epoxy
mortar is available to any contractor, QC Companies experience in its use and in this type of
application make them a single source for this project. In consulting with the epoxy mortar
manufacturer, they stressed the need for experience in its use and application. The price quoted
by QC Companies is within the amount budgeted.
Primary Issues to Consider
• Why are the trench drains deteriorating? Deicing chemicals and water attack the metal rail
and rebar that holds the grates resulting in rust which gradually expands and exerts pressure
on the surrounding concrete causing it to break and crack over time.
