Subject: Presentation on Planned Improvements at Airlake Airport
Gary Schmidt, Director of Reliever Airports for the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) will be
attending the meeting and will be providing a presentation of proposed improvements that are
currently being planned for Airlake Airport. In January of 2018, the City Council approved a petition
from the MAC for the annexation of 118 acres of Airlake Airport to the City of Lakeville. This portion of
the Airport known as the South Runway Area along with the remaining Airlake Airport property has
been part of Eureka Township for over 40 years. In April of 2018, the Metropolitan Airports
Commission approved the 2035 Long-Term Comprehensive Plan for Airlake Airport.
Both of these actions have resulted in plans being developed for the extension of City sewer and
water service to the South Runway Area to facilitate additional hanger development and other
proposed improvements for Airlake Airport. Mr. Schmidt will provide an overview of both short-term
and long-term improvements that are being planned for Airlake Airport. In addition, City and County
staff have been in discussions with MAC staff regarding both proposed public and private road
improvements on Airlake Airport property that would be constructed in conjunction with the Co. Rd.
70 expansion project. Several Airlake Industrial Park businesses are also pursuing possible ground
leases on Airport property with the MAC for expanded outdoor storage needs. Mr. Schmidt and City
staff will provide an update on the status of these discussions.
Action Requested:
This is an informational agenda item and EDC Members will be encouraged to ask questions. The EDC
will be requested to provide recommendations to the City Council in the future for specific City
actions that will be required for proposed improvements at Airlake Airport.
