CONTRACT WITH ALPHA VIDEO
FOR REPLACEMENT OF CABLE ROOM BROADCAST EQUIPMENT
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve a contract with Alpha Video
for the purchase of Tightrope Cablecast VIO 4 Video Server, storage system, server licenses and
installation services.
Overview
The existing Tightrope Media Systems SX2 HD needs to be updated to the VIO4-600 to replace . the
current obsolete system, which has recently failed. This system allows us to broadcast on our cable
channels and internet. Currently, we are using a temporary workaround. The requirements requested
in the bid are for an encoder/decoder, multi-format server with an additional 30TB of storage,
increasing content storage to 40TB, two server licenses, bulletin board software and installation.
Included is a three-year hardware warranty and two hours of installation support and training within
the first year.
Communications requested bids from three sources that are qualified to complete these types of
video/cable replacements. Alpha Video included all the required elements and licenses and provided
the lowest bid. Due to product improvements, this new piece of equipment will replace three other
systems (servers and content control equipment) in our future capital plan. Alpha video has provided
a proposal of $24,485. Staff recommends approval of the proposal.
Primary Issues to Consider
• Will it support future needs and technology of our systems?
o This new encoder will replace older obsolete technology that is no longer supported by
Tightrope. It also includes training for our staff to optimize the system.
