HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 06.m Date: Item No. Seasonal Employee Salaries Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve the Resolution adopting salaries for seasonal employees. Overview In 2019, the only salary adjustment for seasonal wages was applied to Level 1, Step 1 of the pay scale. There were no changes to Level 1, Steps 2 through 5, Level 2 and Level 3 for 2019. Staff conducted a seasonal salary survey for seasonal maintenance positions. Based on the survey results, the beginning market average for seasonal maintenance I was $11.82 for 2019. The beginning market average for a seasonal maintenance II was $13.62 for 2019. Seasonal maintenance I positions are reclassified to Level 3. Seasonal maintenance II positions are reclassified to Level 5. This will bring the positions in align with our comparable cities. The 2020 seasonal pay plan reflects a 2.5% increase for Level 1, Step 1. There are $0.50 increases for steps 2 through 5. Level 2 and Level 4 (formerly Level 3) were adjusted accordingly. The Community Theatre Staff position reflects a 2.5% increase. There are no proposed salary changes for other specialized positions for 2020. The Personnel Committee has reviewed the information and is recommending approval of the seasonal pay plan. The proposed pay rate increases are included in the 2020 budget. Primary Issues to Consider • Having competitive seasonal wages will attract and retain seasonal employees. The proposed wages also comply with the Minnesota Minimum Wage Law. RESOLUTION APPROVING SALARIES FOR SEASONAL EMPLOYEES AND INSTRUCTORS WHEREAS, the City Council has an adopted pay plan to provide for the compensation of employees in various positions; and WHEREAS, employees will start employment at Step 1 of the assigned classification unless credit is given for prior relevant work experience and will progress through the steps on an annual basis until they reach Step 5, the highest step available. WHEREAS, the pay plan will be adjusted from time to time in consideration of market conditions and the federal and Minnesota minimum wage laws; WHEREAS, when Minnesota State minimum wage requirements are increased, any position that falls below the new minimum wage requirement will be adjusted to the new rate; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lakeville, Minnesota that the following salaries for seasonal employees and instructors are adopted effective January 1, 2020.
