The following is the Director’s Report for February 2020.
Building Permit Report
The City has issued building permits with a total valuation of $14,500,129 through January. This
compares to a total valuation of $16,849,114 for building permits issued through January of 2019.
The City has issued 39 single-family home permits through January with a total valuation of $11,181,000.
This compares to 33 single-family home permits with a total valuation of $10,955,000 during the same
period in 2019. The City has also issued six townhome permits with a total valuation of $1,481,000
through January compared to nine permits with a total valuation of $1,914,000 during the same period
in 2019.
According to Housing First Minnesota, the City of Lakeville issued the highest number of residential
permits in the Twin Cities in January followed by Woodbury, Plymouth, Corcoran and Shakopee.
Development Update
The following are updates on a number of active commercial, industrial, and multi-family residential
projects:
• Natural Balance Massage held a ribbon cutting on January 13th at 17595 Kenwood Trail, Suite
270.
• Hampton Inn & Suites held a ribbon cutting on January 14th to celebrate its new 4-story, 117-
unit hotel located at 20851 Keokuk Avenue. The facility includes an indoor pool for guests and
a meeting room that can accommodate up to 39 people.
• Puppy Play & Stay held a ribbon cutting at 16320 Kenrick Loop on February 10th. The new doggy
daycare is located in the former Mi5 building and can board up to 150 dogs.
• QA1 Precision Products has completed construction and moved into its new 100,000-square-
foot building at 9574 217th Street W, just south of Schneiderman’s Distribution Center. The
company has scheduled a ribbon cutting for March 12th.
• Health Partners Park Nicollet Clinic’s new 2-story, 28,420-square-foot building is complete, and
staff began seeing patients in the new building, located at 18484 Kachina Court, on February
24th. All clinic operations have been moved over from the previous location near Target and
Caribou Coffee on 185th Street, and new health care services are being offered thanks to the
additional space.
• Polytek Surface Coatings has complete construction on its new 2-story 17,218-square-foot
building at 7850 Lakeville Boulevard. This business was previously located in a smaller leased
space in the Hebert Building III on Heron Way.
• Recycle Minnesota has completed construction of the 21,240-square-foot building addition to
its existing 41,834-square-foot recycling facility located at 8812 215th Street. The business also
added a 69-foot tall storage silo on the property which will store recycled glass, such as
beverage bottles and food jars, that is then periodically loaded into a semi-trailer for over-the-
road transport.
• U-Haul’s new 131,307-square-foot three-story climate-controlled self-storage building is under
construction at the southeast corner of Cedar Avenue (CSAH 23) and Lakeville Boulevard (CSAH
50).
• Construction progress is being made on two new multi-family developments in the city
including Springs at Lakeville - 260 market-rate rental townhome-style apartments at the
northwest corner of Cedar Avenue and Dodd Boulevard, and the Edison at Spirit – 160 market-
rate apartment units near Hy-Vee grocery store and Taco Bell, just east of Pilot Knob Road and
south of County Road 46.
• FedEx Freight recently submitted a preliminary and final plat application so that the company
can expand its existing docks (35,345 square feet to the north and 48,500 square feet to the
east) and adding 4,680 square feet onto the existing shop space.
• The Moments Memory Care has been approved to build a 2-story, 78,000-square-foot building
expansion to the west of its current location. The new building would have 60 memory care
units and be connected to the existing building, which houses 32 units. A groundbreaking is
planned for February 27th.
Additional Highlights
• The City’s Community & Economic Development department was featured during the
Chamber’s January ‘Good Morning Lakeville’ event. A group of 30 Chamber members went on
a bus tour of the city to learn more about current and future development projects.
• Open to Business hosted a First Steps Seminar at the Dakota County CDA office in January. This
is a new offering taught by Dakota County’s new business representative Karen Schaffhausen.
Twenty people attended the training session and 100% of attendees said they would
recommend the seminar to others. Ms. Schaffhausen will be hosting more workshops around
the county in 2020, including a Food Business Seminar on February 26th from 6:00-8:30pm at
the CDA.
• The CVB recently launched LakevilleRestaurants.com to promote all of the eating
establishments available in Lakeville. There are over 60 locations listed!
• The Community & Economic Development Department recently submitted Request for
Information proposals to MN DEED and Greater MSP.
• Mark your calendars to attend the 2020 Advisory Appreciation Dinner on March 11th at 6:00pm
at the Lakeville Area Arts Center and the State of the Business Community luncheon on March
18th at Fire Station #1.
