HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 08.a Date: Item No. DECLARATION OF LOCAL EMERGENCY Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve resolution to extend the period of a mayor-declared local emergency. Overview On March 16th, Mayor Anderson declared a local emergency related to the COVID- 19/Coronavirus pandemic. By state statute, city council action is required to extend this declaration for more than three days. The declaration of an emergency allows cities to utilize special provisions in many state statutes. In particular, the council is able to combat the disaster and provide emergency assistance without complying with time-consuming procedures and formalities that are generally required before: • The performance of public work. • Entering into contracts. • Incurring obligations. • Employing temporary workers. • Renting equipment. • Purchasing supplies and materials. • The appropriation and expenditure of public funds. Primary Issues to Consider Is this necessary at this time? This is a very fluid situation and circumstances are changing hour by hour. Consistent with the State of Minnesota’s emergency declaration, this provides the city with greater flexibility in providing critical city services to our residents and taxpayers.
