The information used to evaluate this structure was gathered by CR Solar on behalf of Right Angle Engineering. The roof structure consists of pre-manufactured trusses spaced at 24” on center. The roof material consists of asphalt shingles. The design criteria used to analyze this structure are listed above and included with this letter. The adopted building codes in this jurisdiction are: the 2018 International Building Code, the 2018 International Existing Building Code, and ASCE 7-16. International Existing Building Code (IEBC) 2018 section 806.2 indicates that alterations to an existing building that results in less than a 5% increase in the total stress may be performed without a structural evaluation of the existing building. As demonstrated in the attached calculations, the additional weight of the solar panels will be less than 5% increase in the gravity loading and the stress on the existing roof framing. Based on our assessment we have determined that the existing roof framing will safely and adequately support the additional loads imposed by the solar panels without reinforcement. In order for the loads to be evenly distributed, the roof attachments should be staggered and spread evenly throughout the panel array. Attachment points should be spaced at a maximum of 48” on center. The racking system should be installed per the manufacture’s specifications. There should be a minimum of 48 Unirac Flashloc attachment points to the roof. Each attachment should have a 5/16” or 18/8 SS lag screw with 2.5” minimum penetration centered on each truss top chord or rafter. Waterproofing around the roof penetrations is the responsibility of others. Right Angle Engineering assumes no responsibility for improper installation of the solar panels. A total of three Low Profile QuickBolt and L-Foot assemblies were tested for each load type. The samples submitted were the 5/16 in. x 5-1/4 in. Low Profile QuickBolt and Aluminum L-Foot from Kit #17664 with a 5/16 in. Hex Serrated Flange Nut 18-8, Part #15879. The submitted sample materials are the same as the parts in Part #17666 and #17667. INITIAL SETUP The Low Profile QuickBolt and L-Foot assembly was assembled in our laboratory and was directly attached to a Douglas Fir 2"x4" through a 12 mm Birch plywood base. A 3/16" dia hole was predrilled into the rafter and plywood fixture and the Low Profile QuickBolt was installed using a 3" OD EPDM, Type 304 Stainless Compression Washer against the plywood base. Each 2"x4" rafter was connected to the plywood using two screws at each end of the 12 in. long 2"x4" (See Pages 3 - 5 for Photos). TEST PROCEDURE Tensile Load (Uplift) Test A total of three tests were conducted for tensile load (uplift) capacity on an Instron Universal Test Machine (UTM). The test samples were rigidly attached to the test machine using clamps and a tensile load was applied to the Low Profile QuickBolt. The tensile load was applied at a constant crosshead rate of 0.09 in./min. without shock until failure. The load and displacement at failure were recorded and the failure mode was documented in photos.
