HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-27-98 { f MEMORANDUM • TO: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION .r/"7 FROM: MICHAEL SOBOTA, COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVEL MENT DIRECTOR DATE: OCTOBER 22, 1998 RE: CANCELLATION OF OCTOBER 27, 1998 EDC MEETING The October 27, 1998 EDC meeting has been cancelled. The Trout Subcommittee will, however, be meeting that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as they continue to study South Creek issues. The EDC will meet in November. I will work with Chairman Vogel to put together an agenda and establish a date. Tentative dates would be either November 171h or November 24m Please also consider this an update on recent activities. Thursday, October 22, 1998, Chairman Vogel, Mayor Duane Zaun, and myself interviewed candidates for the Economic Development Coordinator position. Two finalists were selected and will be interviewed early next week to fill the position. We are hopeful that either of the two • candidates would be able to fulfill the duties and responsibilities. Barton-Aschmann Associates has completed their inventory of the Landscape Corridors within the community. The Landscape Corridor Subcommittee will be meeting as soon as the corridor information is submitted, pending a review by staff. Manufacturers' Week included the delivery of certificates to each manufacturing firm personally by the Mayor, Bob Erickson, Lea Guenther, Chamber members, Ron Mullenbach, and myself. The personal contact was rewarding and useful information was garnered through this process that is helpful. City Administrator Bob Erickson, myself, Sean and Pat Regan, and Dave Fellon, Progressive Rail, met with the CEO and project development team from Liberty Diversified Industries (LDI). Lakeville is on the short list fora 250,000 square foot manufacturing facility with an initial investment of $10-12 million. We will be following up with LDI to provide additional information. Attached is a proposal sent to LDI as a part of a package put together by Airiake Development, Inc. Grist Mill is also working on a 200,000 square foot-plus warehouse project. Site selection is moving forward with construction in 1999. International Home Foods, the new owner, is considering this major investment. • 032 -98. D O C::10/22l98 a Staff has met with a real estate specialist from the U.S. Postal Service regarding the postal service identified need to construct a 26,000 square foot facility to house the 57 • carriers for the Lakeville and Farmington Post Offices. The carrier functions are currently operating out of the respective post offices. Discussion with the postal service included the need for upgraded mail pick-up service from Airlake Industrial Park and Fairfield Business Campus. Staff is working on a proposal to the postal service for a location that would inGude pick-up service/drop-off service for Airlake. Nicole Bennett and the Chamber had completed a detailed survey of Airlake Industrial Park needs. This information will be forwarded to the postal service with the site proposal. Enclosed please find the updated building permit statistics through September 30, 1998 of this year. We are at record pace for building and development, which we expect to hit over $120 million this calendar year. We appreciate your patience as we attempt to fill the position of Economic Development Coordinator. As soon as that position is filled, we will inform you of the starting date, person selected, and confirm the EDC meeting date in November.
