MEMORANDUM
•
TO: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION .r/"7
FROM: MICHAEL SOBOTA, COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVEL MENT DIRECTOR
DATE: OCTOBER 22, 1998
RE: CANCELLATION OF OCTOBER 27, 1998 EDC MEETING
The October 27, 1998 EDC meeting has been cancelled. The Trout Subcommittee will,
however, be meeting that afternoon at 4:00 p.m. as they continue to study South Creek
issues.
The EDC will meet in November. I will work with Chairman Vogel to put together an
agenda and establish a date. Tentative dates would be either November 171h or
November 24m
Please also consider this an update on recent activities. Thursday, October 22, 1998,
Chairman Vogel, Mayor Duane Zaun, and myself interviewed candidates for the
Economic Development Coordinator position. Two finalists were selected and will be
interviewed early next week to fill the position. We are hopeful that either of the two
• candidates would be able to fulfill the duties and responsibilities.
Barton-Aschmann Associates has completed their inventory of the Landscape Corridors
within the community. The Landscape Corridor Subcommittee will be meeting as soon
as the corridor information is submitted, pending a review by staff.
Manufacturers' Week included the delivery of certificates to each manufacturing firm
personally by the Mayor, Bob Erickson, Lea Guenther, Chamber members, Ron
Mullenbach, and myself. The personal contact was rewarding and useful information
was garnered through this process that is helpful.
City Administrator Bob Erickson, myself, Sean and Pat Regan, and Dave Fellon,
Progressive Rail, met with the CEO and project development team from Liberty
Diversified Industries (LDI). Lakeville is on the short list fora 250,000 square foot
manufacturing facility with an initial investment of $10-12 million. We will be following up
with LDI to provide additional information. Attached is a proposal sent to LDI as a part
of a package put together by Airiake Development, Inc.
Grist Mill is also working on a 200,000 square foot-plus warehouse project. Site
selection is moving forward with construction in 1999. International Home Foods, the
new owner, is considering this major investment.

Staff has met with a real estate specialist from the U.S. Postal Service regarding the
postal service identified need to construct a 26,000 square foot facility to house the 57 •
carriers for the Lakeville and Farmington Post Offices. The carrier functions are
currently operating out of the respective post offices.
Discussion with the postal service included the need for upgraded mail pick-up service
from Airlake Industrial Park and Fairfield Business Campus. Staff is working on a
proposal to the postal service for a location that would inGude pick-up service/drop-off
service for Airlake.
Nicole Bennett and the Chamber had completed a detailed survey of Airlake Industrial
Park needs. This information will be forwarded to the postal service with the site
proposal.
Enclosed please find the updated building permit statistics through September 30, 1998
of this year. We are at record pace for building and development, which we expect to
hit over $120 million this calendar year.
We appreciate your patience as we attempt to fill the position of Economic Development
Coordinator. As soon as that position is filled, we will inform you of the starting date,
person selected, and confirm the EDC meeting date in November.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. •
