HomeMy WebLinkAbout3. 2020-2023 Strategic PlanCity of Lakeville Community & Economic Development Memorandum To: Economic Development Commission Justin Miller, City Administrator From: David L Olson, Community & Economic Development Director Copy: Kati Bachmayer, Economic Development Coordinator Date: March 22, 2022 Subject: Update on the Status of the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan for Economic Development Staff has prepared a 2021 update on the status of the four Strategic Priorities that were included in the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan. These priorities are: • Business Retention, Expansion, & Diversification • Maximize & Market Our Competitive Edge • Housing to Support Economic Goals • Workforce Availability & Utilization It is staff’s opinion that there has been significant progress on most of the priorities identified in the Strategic Plan during the past two years in spite of having to also address unanticipated issues that came up as a result of the pandemic. I would also like to remind the EDC that in the second half of next year, work will need to begin on the next 3-4 year strategic plan. Action Requested: Provide feedback and comments as well as ask questions regarding the attached Strategic Plan update. 2021 PROGRESS REPORT ON 2020-2023 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN Business Retention, Expansion & Diversification Maximize & Market Our Competitive Edge Housing to Support Economic Goals Workforce Availability & Utilization The private sector invested almost $95 million into commercial and industrial park development in Lakeville in 2021 and the largest permitted project was a new LTL trucking facility for Magnum Trucking, valued at $11 million. Building permit valuation totaled $371,760,897 (the second highest total in city history) Lakeville issued 527 single-family permits in 2021 and continued to rank #1 in residential permit numbers in the Twin Cities. In addition, the City issued 209 townhome permits and 11 apartment project permits (with a total of 390 units). Lakeville Works partnership with the Chamber. Serve on task force committee and marketing subcommittee (monthly meetings). Participate in strategic planning and Lakeville Works related events. Amazon XL Fulfillment Center opened in August. $50 million building permit valuation. New 750,000 SF building, which is the largest in the industrial park The U.S. Census Bureau released Lakeville's updated population information, which was 69,490 in 2020. This equates to a 24.19% population increase since 2010. Lakeville ranks #3 for population growth numbers in the Twin Cities behind Minneapolis and St. Paul and is now the largest city in Dakota County. Angie Craig The Outdoor GreatRoom Company moved to Lakeville (occupying 95,000 SF in 158,000 SF spec building, Job Creation Fund grant recipient) Expansion of County Road 70 from a 2-lane to 4-lane divided highway to improve traffic flow and safety of a major industrial park transportation artery The Moments of Lakeville (added 60 units in a new 2-story, 78,000 SF building) New Market Bank named a 2021 Employer of Excellence by Dakota- Scott County Workforce Development Board Summit Orthopedics was issued a building permit in March for a new 2-story, 25- 660 SF medical office building Helped facilitate new hangar construction at Airlake Airport Support senior housing through Lakeville LOOP senior circulator bus and home repairs and chores program Children’s Minnesota Specialty Center opened in January in the former Park Nicollet Clinic location Annexation of over 200 acres of land into the industrial park (Ruddle and Adelmann properties) for future growth ETS Performance South Metro (expansion), Compcare Urgent Care (opened) Open to Business Tires Plus was issued a building permit in March for a 6,262 SF building Interactive Development Map Red’s Savoy Pizza (opened), Fuchi Poke (opened), Masterpiece Chocolates (opened), Raising Cane’s (under construction), Pizza Ranch (reopened, new owners), Mainstreet Coffee & Wine Bar (new owners) Minnesota Marketing Partnership ad Loeffler Construction (purchased building and relocated) Thrive!
