HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-15-2023Youth Advisory Commission Minutes, January 15, 2023 Page 1 CITY OF LAKEVILLE YOUTH ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES January 15, 2023 6:30 p.m. Chair Knock Swanson called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Youth Advisory Commission Members: Faisal Ali, Rylee Eykyn, Aaimah Khawaja, Peyton Knock Swanson, Katherine Krogstad, Iftinta Mohamed, Faadumo Mohamed, Ava Nielson, Katie Sheehan Members Absent: Ella Fowler, Caitlyn Holl, Eston Moulder Staff Present: Courtney Miller, Assistant to the City Administrator Ex-Officio Members Present: Mayor Luke Hellier, Fire Chief Mike Meyer 1. Approval of Agenda Motion by Krogstad, second by Eykyn to approve the agenda. Motion passed unanimously. 2. Approval of Minutes Motion by Sheehan, second by Nielson to approve the minutes. Motion passed unanimously. 3. Mayor Luke Hellier Mayor Hellier opened with inviting Commissioners to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by attending a breakfast and program at Prior Lake High School. He shared his professional and personal background. He talked about his role on the Council. He invited Commissioners to attend City Council meetings in the future. 4. Fire Chief Mike Meyer Fire Chief Meyer introduced himself and provided his background. He shared that he’s been with the Lakeville Fire Department since 1995 and has been chief since 2010. He talked about the department’s current structure of paid on call as well as a duty crew program that started in 2015. Chief Meyer also gave the commissioners a tour of the fire department. 5. Other Commissioner Nielson shared information on a book club that is taking place at the Lakeville public library and invited other Commissioners to join. Ms. Miller shared that the City is seeking applicants for its boards and commissions. Commissioners are invited to share the information with friends and family that may be interested in serving. The application is live through January 23, 2023. Commissioners discussed the current timeframe for meetings and decided to extend meetings going forward from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 6. Youth Advisory Commission priority projec ts The Commissioners broke out into two subcommittees that were established at the December 2022 meeting. One subcommittee discussed mental health awareness and potential programming. The Youth Advisory Commission Minutes, January 15, 2023 Page 2 Commissioners in the subcommittee will reach out to their school counselors to find out what how the schools are addressing the topic. The other subcommittee discussed school relations and ways to enhance communication between the student body and the administration/school board. It also discussed ways to increase awareness of the Youth Advisory Commission within the school. 7. Next Meeting Date The next meeting will be held on February 19, 2023, in the Marion Conference Room at Lakeville City Hall. 8.
