Motion by Eykyn, second by Khawaja to approve the minutes. Motion passed unanimously.
5. Lakeville Schools Superintendent Dr. Doug Van Zyl
Superintendent Van Zyl shared with the Commissioners his role as superintendent, his
education and professional background, and topics that he and the school board are discussing
and working on. In closing, he asked the Commissioners to share with him matters that are
important to them and matters that they would like him to know about.
6. Youth Advisory Commission Priority Projects
The Commissioners divided into two subcommittees that were established at the December 2022
meeting. One subcommittee continued discussions on mental health awareness and potential
programming. They discussed items to include on a flyer that they hope to have posted online for
students to access. The Commissioners plan to reach out to school officials to make sure they are
able to post the flyer on school webpages.
The other subcommittee continued discussions on school relations and ways to enhance
communication between the student body and the administration/school board. They asked Dr. Van
Zyl if the school board would consider including a student position on the school board in a non-
voting capacity. Finally, they discussed creating an online form that other students could access by
scanning a QR code. The form would create an avenue for other students to contact the Youth
Advisory Commission, provide input to it, and subscribe to future updates. The Commissioners will
ask permission from school officials to put up flyers with the QR code in the schools.
7. Next Meeting Date
The next meeting will be held on March 19, 2023, in the Marion Conference Room at
Lakeville City Hall.
