Parks & Recreation
Memorandum
To: Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Committee Members
From: John Hennen, Parks and Recreation Director
Date: February 28, 2024
Subject: Discuss Renaming of Avonlea Community Park
Staff is asking for a recommendation from the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources
Committee (PRNRC) in establishing a better name for Avonlea Community Park considering
that name ties to the name of the neighborhood development. Development names are
typically used for neighborhood parks not community parks such as Casperson, Steve Michaud,
King, Aronson, Quigley-Sime, East, etc.
In January of 2019, Staff provided some ideas of possible names to the PRNRC for the park that
were considered/discussed. Additional names were then added per committee member’s
input. The following are the names that were considered and discussed at that time:
Cedar Crest Park
Cedar Park
Cedar Pond
Cedar Prairie Park
Cedar View Park (park is between Cedar Avenue and Highview Avenue)
Discovery Park
Grandview Park
Greenbelt Park
Highland Meadows Park
Mayflower Park
Prospect Park
Summit Park
At the January 9th, 2019 PRNRC meeting, committee members decided the following names
were their top choices for the park:
1. Cedar Prairie Park
2. Cedar View Park
3. Cedar Crest Park
Considering it has been a few years since we discussed the topic, we have many new members
on the committee, and construction of the park will commence this spring, staff wanted to
revisit the renaming of Avonlea Park with committee members to confirm Cedar Prairie Park
was still the preferred choice. If so, we would move forward with that recommendation. If not,
I would suggest committee members come to the meeting with their top two choices from the
list or come to the meeting with any additional names you would like the committee to
consider. I have also attached our current (1997) Park Naming Policy.
(We currently have a Cedar Crossing Park and a Cedar Highlands Park. Developments that
contain the word Cedar include Cedar Hills, Cedar Landing and Cedar Creek Villas so these names
should not be considered for the park name.)
Thanks everyone and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
