Overview
The Council has voiced a desire to work through an exercise and have some dialogue with staff
in relation to planning and preparation for a large-scale catastrophic event. Many measures are
put into place to prevent such things from happening, and we hope that any training or plans put
into place are never needed to be executed in real time, but we know that part of our role in
supporting our community is to be prepared from a city leadership standpoint.
Staff from the Police, Fire, and Communications departments will provide the Council with
general recommendations regarding expected roles and responsibilities during and in the
aftermath of an event or incident which causes widespread damage or casualties. In addition,
Staff will lead the Council through a tabletop scenario designed to provide some context as to
how some of these responsibilities would fit into a realistic situation.
The overall goal of this discussion is to prompt thought, provide direction, answer questions and
ensure we continue to be prepared to meet our community’s needs in the event we experience a
situation where we experience large-scale destruction of property or loss of human life. Having
a clear understanding of everyone’s roles and how those can mesh together to serve the
community as a whole is beneficial to all involved.
