RESOLUTION REQUESTING
MINNESOTA COMMISSIONER OF TRANSPORTATION
TO AUTHORIZE 40 MPH SPEED ZONE ON
IPAVA AVENUE BETWEEN
178TH STREET AND 185TH STREET
WHEREAS, a 40 MPH speed zone on this section of Ipava Avenue wilt be a speed
posting reduction from 50 MPH to 40 MPH, and
WHEREAS, this speed zone reduction will create a consistent speed zone of 40 MPH
throughout the entire length of Ipava Avenue, and
WHEREAS, this section of Ipava Avenue has been built to include, at grade, pedestrian
walking trails on both the east and west sides of the driving lanes off Ipava Avenue,
and
WHEREAS, a 40 MPH speed zone will create a safer situation for the
vehicle/pedestrian design utilization, and
WHEREAS, consistency in signage throughout the City of Lakeville is of extreme
importance to promote safe vehicle operation throughout the City, and
WHEREAS, it is the intent of the City of Lakeville to establish a 20 MPH School Speed
Zone on Ipava Avenue to be consistent with all other School Speed Zones established
in the City, and
WHEREAS, Resolution attachments A & B are letters of support for the establishment
of a 40 MPH speed zone from Lakeville Police Chief Dave Martens and Eastview
Elementary School Principal Dick Oskerson, and
WHEREAS, the future reconstruction of Ipava Avenue will create a parkway design with
internal design features to reduce vehicle speeds, and
WHEREAS, the establishment of a 40 MPH speed zone is a requested variance to the
findings of the current Minnesota Department of Transportation speed zone survey,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Lakeville formally requests a
40 MPH speed zone be authorized by the Minnesota Commissioner of Transportation
for the section of Ipava Avenue between 178th Street and 185th Street.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 19tH day of August, 1996, by the City Council of
the City of Lakeville.
