RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPORTATION
IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY AND PROVIDING FOR STAFF TIME
-FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TRANSIT PROPOSAL
WHEREAS, the Cities of Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Lakeville,
and Savage recognize the vulnerability of a transportation system so highly
dependent upon the automobile and imported fuel; and
WHEREAS, this is especially true of the region south of the
Minnesota River, where the River provides a natural barrier limiting
access to other parts of the metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, transportation plays an important role in promoting
a diversity of development and opportunities for employment, retail,
cultural, recreation, etc.; and
WHEREAS, the interest in transit services shared. by Apple
Valley, Burnsville, Eagan., Lakeville, and Savage has reached the Metropolitan
Council and they have expressed a keen interest in participating in the
study of transit serviced in this. area.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Lakeville
recognizes the importance of careful planning to deal with the energy
issues facing this region and agrees to participate with the Cities of
Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan and;Savage to study the development
of transit services to serve these communities.`
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that each community appoint a staff
representative to a steering committee to begin immediate work on initial
program development and that. each community also appoint two representatives
to a Citizens Transit Committee to be responsible .for the design,
implementation and monitoring of a transit system for the region south
of the Minnesota River.
