PARK AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
FEBRUARY 19, 19$6
7:00 PM
Roll call: Anderson, Messinger and Grenz were present. Members Gramstad
and Lovelace could not make the meeting. Member Briscoe was not present.
The next order of business was the approval of the minutes of the February
11, 1986 Park and Recreation Committee special meeting.
86-19 It was moved by Messinger, seconded by Anderson, to approve the minutes.
Motion passed.
Item three was a special agenda item. Park Director Steve Michaud
presented a proposal from the Lakeville Police Department requesting that a
park be named in honor of Jimmy Jensen who is retiring from the Police
force after 30 years of service with the City of Lakeville. Staff informed
the committee that Lions Park, located on the turn of Highway 50 coming
into town on the north, has no significance for it's name as it relates to
the Lions Club. It would be a good location where a sign could be placed,
admiring Officer Jensen.
86-20 After a short discussion it was moved by Anderson, seconded by Grenz, to
recommend to City Council that Lions Park be renamed to read: James J.
Tensen Park.
Motion passed.
The next order of business was introduction of committee members and staff
to a crowd of citizens that numbered about 20. The group was gathered to
hear the first public presentation for. the park bond referendum. Steve
began the presentation and went through all the aspects of the various 15
projects being proposed. There were several questions from the citizens
which were answered by staff and committee members.
Various questions and concerns were the safety factor of crossing Cedar
Avenue and Highway 50 with our bike trail, how various design concepts of
various parks were arrived at, the issue of the boat launch at Casperson
Property and the development of Lakeridge Park. Overall, the group
supported all the issues involved in the bond referendum. There was a good
exchange of ideas and strategies for selling the bond referendum to the
citizenry.
Staff, the committee and citizens then discussed the next meeting and the
process from here. A memo was passed out to aII persons present outlining
the job responsibilities of being a member of the citizens task force. As
part of the citizens task force, there were several subcommittees which
were also discussed.
Staff informed the committee and citizens that the next meeting would be
March 5, 1986 at 7:00 PM at the Lakeville Council Chambers. At this
