HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 04.aARTS CENTER Tom Barnard AUGUST, 2010 • Expressions Community Theater opened its run of The Education of Angels on Friday, August 6, and continued for two weekends. • Prairie Fire Children's Theatre Camp ran from August 16 through August 20 culminating in two performances of The Wizard of Oz on August 20 and 21 for a total audience attendance of 445. • The current gallery exhibit consists of quilts on display by the Northern Star Statler Quilt Club and the Minnesota Contemporary Quilt Club. This exhibit will remain open through September 15. • A local family rented the LAAC auditorium for a wedding dinner on Thursday, August 12. • Summer arts camp this month included Viva Italia!, Pottery for Your Pets, Discovering the Brush, Bead Art, Adaptive Painting and a special class for earning a scout merit badge in pottery. • Cactus Willie, Boxcar Bob and The Drifter performed on Saturday, August 21, for an audience of 130. • All carpets were professionally cleaned and the tile floors were stripped and waxed during the last two weeks of August. UPCOMING PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT • The kickoff for the performing arts series this season is blues -folk singer Sofie Reed on September 17, followed by the Lakeville Art Festival on September 18 and 19. • Applause Community Theatre opens their production of Our Town on September 23. • The first Wine Academy for the fall is being held on September 29. Volleyball 24 teams RECREATION AUGUST, 2010 • The fall /winter brochure was delivered to Lakeville residents on August 28 • Athletic fields have been scheduled for the fall and field map booklet completed • Annual Safety Camp, August 16 & 17 Programs Patty Dexter / Dan Brettschneider UPCOMING • Staff recruitment of warminghouse attendants, deadline to submit applications is October 1 • Prep work of upcoming special events — Who Done it Hike and Haunted Forest • Volunteer recruitment for Haunted Forest and Santa Secret Store Page 3 of 4 SENIOR CENTER AUGUST, 2010 • Night to Unite — the Senior Center held a kick -off event, which included speakers, entertainment and a sloppy Joe lunch. • Singles Group — new program which attracted 20 seniors (19 women and 1 man!) to its organizational meeting. • Horizon Day Care visit — 21 children and 21 seniors made homemade ice cream and played Bingo. • Happy Feet foot care is becoming very popular again. Appointments are filled two months out and we have waiting lists most months. • New educational seminars presented by local chiropractors are well- received. We only have around six members attending the seminars, but they are very pleased with the programs. • The Current Event Discussion Group members are enjoying their discussion sessions. • Fifteen seniors attended the monthly barbecue and raved about the chicken kabobs. • New watercolor classes began this month. We met our minimum of four registrants, which is an improvement over past classes which had to be cancelled because of low enrollment. • Our August day trip to Duluth also met its minimum of 30 registrants. • UCare Exercise is finished at the Senior Center. A new class similar to the UCare program will begin in September. • 500 Cards and Euchre are both down to six players, due to older members passing away. These two card groups are made up of older players who have been playing at the Center for 25 years. • Ballroom dance is down to two members taking lessons. August classes were cancelled because these two members were ill. • 21 new members during this time period. Total membership (new and renewed) is 956. Linda Walter UPCOMING • New programs beginning in September are: o Cooking 101 for Men Only (one -dish meals) o Cooking Around the World (September class is Chinese cooking) o Travel Circle (members are invited to share stories and photos of their travels, or listen to others and get ideas for their next vacation) Page 4 of 4
