CITY OF LAKEVILLE • RESOLUTION DATE: June i8, 2001 RESOLUTION NO.: 01-98 MOTION BY: Mulvihill- SECONDED BY: Bellows RESOLUTION REQUESTING DAKOTA .COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS CONSIDER ACQUISITION DEVELOPMENT OFA NEW DAKOTA COUNTYPARK UNIT IN THE NORTHEAST SECTION OF LAKEVILLE WHEREAS, the Cities of Apple Valley, Farmington, Lakeville, Rosemount and Empire Township continue to be some of the fastest growing areas in the metropolitan area; and WHEREAS, high quality natural resources are being purchased for residential development at an alarming rate; and WHEREAS, municipalities are attempting to keep pace with providing adequate park and open space areas to service area resident's recreational needs; and • WHEREAS, Lebanon Hills Regional Park is the only regional park .within Dakota County in close proximity, to the major populated areas of the County; and WHEREAS, GOAL #9, Opportunities for Recreation and Enjoyment as published in the Dakota County Indicators 2000, Measuring Progress in Environmental and Recreational Goals, states visits made to regional parks have increased dramatically over the past decade.. Dakota County regional park visitation has more than doubled the rate of population growth within the County. The demand for parks and recreation facilities is projected to continue increasing; and WHEREAS, the City of Lakeville has entered into an agreement to acquire 40 acres east of Pilot Knob and north of 170t" Street in an area that is abundant with natural resources including three sizable lakes, rolling and flat topography, large oak and coniferous wood stands, bluffs and a variety and abundance of wildlife; and WHEREAS, .the proposed park site has good transportation infrastructure providing access from all areas of the County. WHEREAS, the Lakeville City Council and City of Lakeville Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee request Dakota County consider evaluating this area as a potential future Dakota County regional park unit; and -a _ 'w" WHEREAS, THE City would support such a park facility in close proximity to i Apple Valley, Farmington, Lakeville, Rosemount and surrounding townships and assist the County with planning and other efforts to establish a new County park unit. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED the City Council of the City of Lakeville requests Dakota County Board of Commissioners consider establishing a review committee to investigate the need for a new County park unit to serve the western half of Dakota County .
