HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 06.kOverview Date: January 18, 2011 Item No, Consider Endorsement of Council Member Wendy Wulff for Reappointment as the District 16 Representative on the Metropolitan Council Proposed Action Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve Resolution Endorsing Council Member Wendy Wulff for Re- appointment to the Metropolitan Council Passage of this motion will result in official endorsement and support of Wendy Wulff to continue in her position as District 16 Representative on the Metropolitan Council. Governor Mark Dayton has named Ms. Susan Haigh to replace Peter Bell as Chair of the Metropolitan Council. Governor Dayton is now soliciting applications from residents who would like to be considered for appointment as representatives from each district. Former Lakeville City Council Member Wendy Wulff currently serves as the District 16 representative, serving the residents of Lakeville in that capacity since May 2009. Council Member Wulff is interested in being reappointed to the position. At the January 10, 2011 Council work session, Council directed staff to prepare a resolution in support of Ms. Wendy Wulff for the District 16 seat. The attached resolution will serve as official notice to Governor Dayton that Wendy Wulff is endorsed and supported by the Lakeville City Council. Steven C. Mielke City Administrator Financial Impact: None Budgeted: NO Source: Notes: CITY OF LAKEVILLE RESOLUTION NO, 11- RESOLUTION ENDORSING COUNCIL MEMBER WENDY WULFF FOR RE-APPOINTMENT TO THE METROPOLITAN COUNCIL WHEREAS, Ms. Wendy Wulff has, since May 2009, served as the Metropolitan Council Member representing District 16 which includes the City of Lakeville; and WHEREAS, Governor Dayton has solicited applications to fill the positions on the Metropolitan Council including District 16 and residents of Lakeville are eligible to apply for appointment to fill the seat; and WHEREAS, Council Member Wendy Wulff has expressed an interest and desire to be re- appointed to fill the District 16 seat; and WHEREAS, Council Member Wulff served as a member of the Lakeville City Council from January 2003 to May 2009, and was a member of the Lakeville Planning Commission from February 1996 to December 2002, demonstrating a commitment to developing a strong community and public service; and WHEREAS, Council Member Wulff served on the Metropolitan Council Land Use Advisory Committee and the League of Minnesota Cities Board of Directors prior to her appointment to the Metropolitan Council, exhibiting dedicated service to the Metropolitan Region and State of Minnesota; and WHEREAS, The Lakeville City Council believes Council Member Wulff would continue to provide outstanding service to the residents and businesses of District 16. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Lakeville, Minnesota: That the Lakeville City Council does hereby endorse Wendy Wulff for re- appointment as District 16 Representative on the Metropolitan Council and does hereby express its support for her appointment. ATTEST: Charlene Friedges, City Clerk CITY OF LAKEVILLE Mark Bellows, Mayor STATE of MINNESOTA " MARK DAYTON GOVERNOR DATE: January 4, 2011 TO: Local Government Officials within the Seven - County Metropolitan Area FROM Office of Governor Mark Dayton The purpose of this letter is to inform local government officials that Governor Dayton is seeking applicants for seats on the Metropolitan Council and he invites you to participate in the appointment process. The individuals selected will be appointed to four -year terms. However, redistricting will occur in 2013, which will require new and/or re- appointments to the Council. Please encourage citizens who have an interest in the work of the Council to apply and provide us with any recommendations you may have. According to statute, applicants rnust be a resident of the district for which they are seeking appointment and knowledgeable about urban and metropolitan affairs. A map of the Metropolitan Council districts can be found at: www.rnetrocouncil.org /about /district maps.htm. Metropolitan Council appointments are governed under the Minnesota Open Appointments process administered by the Secretary of State. Interested individuals should contact the Secretary of State's office for an application at 651.556.0643 or visit the website at www.sos.state.mn.us. The Secretary of State published the notice of vacancies on Monday, November 1, 2010 and applicants have until the end of the day on January 14, 2011 to be considered. After receipt by the Secretary of State, applications will be forwarded to the governor's office. Applications will be reviewed by the Metropolitan Council Nominating Committee and qualified applicants will be invited to appear for an interview with the committee at a public hearing in late January or early February. Following the public meeting, the nominating committee will make its recommendations to the governor, who ultimately makes the appointment to the Council.
