Proposed Action
Planning Department and Police Department staff recommend adoption of the following motion:
Move to appoint Officer Shawn Fitzhenry as the ex- officio member of the Planning Commission
for 2011.
Overview
Chapter 2 -1 -2A of the City Code requires that one member of the Planning Commission be a
Lakeville police officer serving in an ex- officio capacity. The ex- officio member does not vote
and serves for a term of one year. The ex- officio vacancy was created with the resignation of
Officer Rick Bussler from that position in December.

Subject: Planning Commission
City of Lakeville
Police Department
After a three year term Officer Bussler has asked to step down as the ex- officio member
of the Lakeville Planning Commission. As a result of this request, notification went out
to all sworn members of the police department to fill this vacancy with the only
requirement that the officer resides in the City and submit a letter of interest and
resume.
Upon conclusion of this process it was determined that Officer Fitzhenry is best suited
to fill the position and has the experience to make a positive contribution on the
commission. I have attached Officer Fitzhenry's letter of interest and resume for your
review.
The ex- officio position on the planning commission allows members of our department
the opportunity to provide an unique perspective on local development as well as
allowing the officers the ability to develop their skills in public speaking, gain a better
understanding of how local government functions, and work with members of the
community and City.
It is my recommendation that Officer Fitzhenry be selected as the next representative
from the police department on the planning commission.

Re: Lakeville Planning Commission
Dear: Captain John Arvidson
Office: (952) 985 -2800 Fax: (952) 985 -4899
I am applying for the Lakeville Planning Commission position that is currently open for
Lakeville Police Officers who reside in the city. I want to enhance my law enforcement
career and feel that this position would allow me to do that. I have worked in the city
since 2001 and lived in the city since 2005, over which I have seen a lot of change. This
position would allow me to be apart of the change and growth of this city. I am also
willing to adjust my schedule as needed to fit the programs needs.
Thank you for providing me with this opportunity.
Sincerely,
5 ft , L. S iL i< „v,(,
Officer Shawn T. Fitzhenry
