HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 05.ePARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT ARTS CENTER JANUARY, 2011 • The Minnesota Photography Club held its monthly meeting at the LAAC on Thursday, January 6. • Heartbeat Dance Studio rehearsed on January 7 and performed its January recital on Saturday, January 8. • Leadership Lakeville was held in the theater on Tuesday, January 11. • On January 13 and 14 the Lakeville Police Department held seminars on domestic violence and women working in a male- dominated industry. • The Galactic Cowboy Orchestra performed on Friday, January 14. • The first of the Highview Hills Coffee Concert Series was held Sunday, January 16, featuring the Ouchard Piano Trio. • The Lakeville Liquors' Wine Academy featured the Styles of Napa on January 19. • The Wonder Bread Years was performed on Friday and Saturday, January 21 and 22. The event was sponsored by the Lakeville Rotary Club. • Children's Castle Theatre opened its production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on the weekend of January 28. • Expressions Community Theater held auditions for its spring show, The Dixie Swim Club on Monday, January 31. Tom Barnard UPCOMING • Opening on February 18 is the "Taste of MACT One -Act Play Festival" which is an eclectic assortment of one -act plays from three different theater companies featuring "This Property is Condemned," "The Bay at Nice" and "For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls." • One Book One Lakeville is presenting Ann Bancroft, one of the world's preeminent polar explorers, and Ann Reed, one of Minnesota's musical treasures. The show is at 100% capacity with advance ticket reservations. • South Metro Chorale is hosting their 10 Annual Cabaret Show the weekend of Mar. 4 -6. One of the questions was, "Where is your favorite place to visit ?" The Senior Center was one of the top places they chose. • New free legal advice program was a hit. All the appointments were filled and participants were pleased with the help they received. • The seniors who went on the "Ice — Tea" trip to St. Paul, which consisted of a high tea at the St. Paul Hotel and a walking tour of the Winter Carnival ice sculptures in Rice Park, had a great time. • The Creative Writing Class started up again after their holiday vacation. They are planning to work with the "Dragonfly" folksingers group, by writing material for a "Dragonfly" performance at the Arts Center in September. • We changed blood pressure checks from Thursday to Wednesday mornings. Attendance increased due to the change. • Offered an estate planning seminar and the seniors were very pleased with the presentation. • Knitting class is having fun chatting and knitting socks, scarves and hats. • There are four people who come to play Nintendo WiiTM bowling every Monday, and four men who play ping pong every Tuesday. It's great to hear them laughing and having fun as they play. • We also have a group that gathers around the exercise equipment in the pool room. A couple of them exercise and the rest hang around to encourage and visit. • Day trips are still hard to sell due to the economy. Even the casino trips have fewer participants than in the past. • 18 new members during this time period. Total membership is 1,091. UPCOMING • Free AARP tax assistance on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings through April 14 — begins on February 2 -3 • Valentine's Party with "Elvis" and `Top Your Tater" lunch — February 14 • Pizza and Dime Bingo — February 16 • Chili & Hugs Potluck — February 24 Page 4 of 4 PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT ARTS CENTER FEBRUARY, 2011 • Children's Castle Theatre from Farmington rented the theater for the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Friday and Saturday, February 4 and 5. • The Minnesota Photography Club held its monthly meeting at the LAAC on Thursday, February 3. • Lakeville Liquors presented a wine - tasting event called Wine and Chocolates on Wednesday, February 9. • An Evening of Art and Dance was presented on Friday, February 11 featuring a collaboration of dancers from Ballet Royale of Minnesota and artwork and artists selected from our gallery exhibits. • The Classics presented a concert of Sinatra -era music on February 12 including champagne and chocolate. • The Highview Hills Coffee Concert on Sunday, February 13 featured the Vecchione /Erdahl Duo and Friends. • A Trio of One -Act Plays prepared for the Minnesota Association of Community Theaters contest was presented on the weekends of February 18 -20 and February 25 -27. The participating theaters were Applause Community Theatre, The Play's the Thing Productions, and The Dakota Fine Arts Consortium. • One Book, One Lakeville on February 24 featured Ann Bancroft in the celebration of the city -wide read of Jack London's Call of the Wild. All appointments were filled for February. • Valentine's Day lunch — 101 people attended to enjoy our "Top Your Tater" lunch and performance by "Elvis." "Elvis" disappointed us by not showing up, but everyone had a good time in spite of it, stating that they enjoyed visiting with their table partners. • Senior center proposal informational meeting; 40 members attended. • Pizza and Bingo with Kenwood Trail students -12 students from Kenwood Trail Middle School who help us with our monthly newsletter joined us for a fun day of pizza and Dime Bingo. Everyone had a good time; the teacher stated that the kids love coming to the senior center! • Offered a Pre -paid Funeral presentation and had a good turn -out; 10 people attended. • Attorney Glenn Nord gave a presentation on "How to Avoid Probate;" 32 people attended. • UCare exercise class is very popular and has 19 people attending this ongoing class. • The new "Legal Advice" program is going strong. Appointments are filled and the participants are pleased with the results. • Singles club and cross - country ski club are growing in numbers. • We offered piano lessons, but had no takers. Also, our wellness class was cancelled due to lack of interest. • 14 new members during this time period. Total membership is 1,105.
