Proposed Action
Police Chief Tom Vonhof will present the Lakeville Police Department Chiefs Award of
Merit to Farmington Police Officer Andrew Van Dorn, Lakeville Firefighter Gregg
Stommes and citizen William Inhofer for their life saving actions in administering CPR to
a vehicle crash victim on July 14 2011.
Overview
On July 14 2011, Lakeville Police and Fire units responded to a one vehicle crash off
the side of the roadway at 20827 Howland Ave possibly involving an unresponsive
driver with the vehicle on fire. While still in route to the location, officers were advised
that the driver had been rescued from the car by citizens who had come to the victim's
aid.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that Farmington Police Officer, Andrew Van
Dorn, off -duty Lakeville Firefighter Gregg Stommes and citizen, William Inhofer were
administering CPR and first aid care to the driver of the vehicle. These three
individuals had seen the smoke rising from the crashed vehicle and rescued the driver
from the vehicle and began CPR before the arrival of any emergency personnel on the
scene.
Officer Thor Howe, in interviewing these men at the crash scene, learned that they had
removed the driver from smoking vehicle and finding no pulse and signs of life,
immediately began administering CPR to the victim. The victim, who was identified as
John Manias, was transported to the hospital and later recovered from his injuries.
Officer Howe, who made the nomination of these three individuals for the Chief's Award
of Merit, noted in his report that, "the quick thinking and response by these men saved
this victim's life. Without these men and their life saving efforts, this would likely have
been a fatality."
